How to Study the Bible in List Form, Verse by Verse

Most Bibles are written in paragraph form with verse numbers buried in the paragraphs. That can make finding verse numbers a little challenging as we exegete a passage verse by verse. That’s what prompted a fellow Logs user to email me the following question:

I primarily use the KJV and the NKJV in sermon preparation. Is there a way to display the text in a single verse format rather than the default paragraph format?

Thankfully the answer is yes with an “oldie but goodie” Logos feature called Bible Text Only!

Take a swing at the following pitch and see if you like it:

  • Open a Bible displayed in paragraph form such as the NKJV (A)
  • Navigate to any passage (B)
  • Notice the verse numbers are buried in the paragraph (C)
  • Click the Visual Filters icon on the Bible’s toolbar (D)

  • Make sure:
    • Resource is expanded (E)
    • Resource is checked (F)
    • Bible text only is expanded (G)
    • Bible text only is checked (H)
  • Select the One verse per line box (I)
  • Click outside the menu to close it (J)

  • Notice the verses are now displayed in list form rather than paragraph form (K)

Please note that this format is local, meaning only this specific Bible is displaying verses in the one verse per line format.

To make global changes so that all Bibles display one verse per line:

  • Rest the cursor on the One verse per line option (L)
  • Click the arrow that appears to the right (M)
  • Select Show in all appropriate resources (N)

  • Open any Bible (O) and it too will be in list form! (P)
