Bible Study Magazine’s 6-Year-Anniversary Issue and New Editor

Nov.–Dec. 2014 marks Bible Study Magazine‘s six-year anniversary issue and our 37th issue overall. We announced the print magazine six and a half years ago here on LogosTalk, and our six-year-anniversary issue may be our best yet!

Here are some highlights from our Nov.–Dec. 2014 issue:

Rooted in the City of Brotherly Love: Dr. Eric Mason

When Dr. Eric Mason first felt the call to plant churches nearly 14 years ago, he envisioned himself as a kind of itinerant preacher. “I wanted to model my work after the Apostle Paul’s by planting a church, spending two or three years getting it up and running, and then moving on to plant another.” But God had different plans in store—now, he is rooted in the city of brotherly love because “with inner-city ministry, you have to be in it for the long haul.” This has taught Mason an incredible amount about biblical literacy and discipleship.

From Soviet Soldier to Seminary President

Andrey Kravstev, like many who grew up in the Soviet Union in the 1980s, was educated in atheism and nationalism. At age 19, he witnessed the decline of the Soviet Union and the revelation of government crimes against the people. Kravstev was a soldier in the Soviet army at the time and quickly grew disillusioned. “I found a page from the New Testament—just one page from John 18 that included the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. . . . That passage struck my heart.” Now, Kravstev is a seminary president and says things like: “Familiarity with the Bible on its own doesn’t mean anything unless there’s an application—unless there’s a way you see it changing your life.”

Out of Slavery: Exodus

In this issue, we follow Israel’s journey out of Egypt and into the wilderness. While it’s a journey that begins with a high note, it has equally low points. After all the miracles, Israel doubts God and twists worship to their own liking. Throughout this story, God chooses to align himself with this feckless people. He has a desire for them: that they would be holy, set apart in order to show his goodness and justice to the world.

It’s easy to look down on Israel’s faith—but as we study the story closely, we can see ourselves. Our redemption has been bought for us with a frightening and glorious act—one that the changed the world forever. We’ve been set free from slavery and raised to new life in Christ. What does this look like in your life? What is your response to this freedom?

Truly Love, Dangerously—A Special Letter from the Editor

“My dear friends, No generation is exactly like the one before it. . . . When I look at our world, I see a place that’s more interconnected than ever before. I see the opportunity to leverage these connections to transform lives. I see that, for the first time in all of history, we could very well bring the news of God’s freedom, in Jesus, to the ends of the earth.”

We’re making Bible Study Magazine even better

We’ve redesigned Bible Study Magazine under the direction of Christine Gerhart, added a section especially on Bible study with Logos Bible Software (in extra pages), and put even more thought into how to help you take your Bible study to the next level. Although Bible Study Magazine launched as an award-winning magazine, we have never stopped improving it. Bible Study Magazine is all about helping you get into the Word so that you can effectively make our world a better place!

This serves as my last issue as editor-in-chief of Bible Study Magazine. Rebecca Van Noord is the new editor-in-chief. She loves Jesus and is passionate about Bible study. Van Noord has been managing editor of Bible Study Magazine since April 2011 and has been with the publication since April 2010. She is a fantastic editor and an accomplished author. Van Noord coauthored Connect the Testaments: A Daily Devotional and coedited 40 Days to the Cross: Reflections from Great Thinkers. I look forward to you experiencing even more of her creativity. It’s been an honor to serve Jesus as Bible Study Magazine’s editor-in-chief.
