How to Search for a Greek or Hebrew Phrase from Your English Bible

A fellow Logos user recently emailed me this question:

I wonder if you can advise me how to search for the phrase “the promise” (found in Acts 1:4 ESV) in both the original languages (Hebrew & Greek).

This is an excellent question which I’ll answer from the standpoint of an English student, not primarily using a Hebrew or Greek Bible.

As you’ll see below, the answer involves incorporating a couple of Logos features:

  • Open an English Bible with the interlinear option (A) to a verse containing the desired phrase such as the promise in Acts 1:4 (B)

1

  • Open a Hebrew or Greek Bible such as, The Lexham Greek-English Interlinear New Testament, to the same verse (C)
  • Click the Visual Filters icon on the Hebrew or Greek Bible (D)
  • Check the Corresponding Selection box (E)

2

  • Select (highlight) the desired phrase in the English Bible such as the promise (F)
  • Notice the Corresponding Selection Visual Filter automatically “highlights” the corresponding original language phrase in the Hebrew or Greek Bible (G)

3

  • Select the “highlighted” phrase in the Hebrew or Greek Bible (H)
  • Right click on the selected phrase in the original language Bible (I)
  • Select from the right side of the Context menu the Hebrew or Greek phrase (J)
  • Select from the left side of the Context menu Search this resource (K)

4

  • Notice the Search panel opens displaying every occurrence of that phrase (L)

5

  • Click Verses in the results area (M)
  • Add desired Bibles in the Bible box (N)
  • Press the Enter key to display the results both in Hebrew/Greek and English (O)

6

If you know Hebrew or Greek, you can execute the phrase search initially from the Hebrew or Greek Bible. If, however, you work from an English Bible, the Corresponding Selection Visual Filter shows you which original language phrase to search!
