“I want to know God’s thoughts—the rest are mere details.”
This quote is famously attributed to Albert Einstein. Though we probably don’t agree with his religious views and we don’t literally chase after the knowledge of God’s thoughts, this hyperbolic phrase captures something about the Christian’s heart. Those who follow Jesus are characterized by a desire to know God more deeply: to know his character, his intentions, and his desires. Thankfully we worship a God who speaks. His Word to us is his self-revelation, and through the reading and study of it, we know more of this God who called us out of darkness.
That’s why Bible study is important; we want to know God, and we know someone best through communication. My marriage would hardly be a marriage at all if my wife and I never spoke to each other. How could I really know her? But because we communicate daily, I continue to get to know my wife’s heart and our marriage grows stronger. Likewise, if we are not communicating with God through prayer and the reading of his Word, we cannot ever truly know him.
In Dr. Darrell Bock’s BI100 Learn to Study the Bible, he builds off this idea with Proverbs 2:1–5:
My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
Dr. Bock says that “the reward on the other end is the reception of knowledge about God and the deepening of the fear or respect of God. In other words, our hearts are shaped as well as our minds.” It’s this conviction that helped drive Dr. Bock and Mobile Ed to create a new course specifically designed to help people grow in their Bible study.
