How to Discover Multiple Senses for English Words

A friend and fellow Logos user sent this question to me:

I have a question I hope you can help me with. I’m doing a radio show in two weeks about “Left and Right in the Bible. “ However, when I do a search for “left“ or “right“ they have multiple meanings. Left can mean something left behind or to the left or left-handed, and right can mean correct or to the right or right-handed.  Is there a way to search left or right in its different senses?

This is actually an in-depth Bible study question with an amazingly simple Logos answer!

Give this a go:

  • Choose Guides | Guides | Bible Word Study (A)

  • Type left in the Word box (B)

discover multiple senses for english words in logos

  • Press the Enter key to generate the report
  • Expand the Senses section (C)
  • Notice all of the word meanings (as suggested by a Faithlife team of scholars) throughout the Bible containing the word left (D)
  • Expand each one individually to discover the various Hebrew and Greek words with that specific sense (E)

Of course to fully answer my friend’s question, you would repeat the process for the word right.
