Quickly Display Lemmas Sharing a Common Root

A Logos user contacted me with this Bible study scenario:

I’m studying the word “equip” in Ephesians 4:12. A commentary I’m using says this Greek word is related to the word “mending” in Matthew 4:21 and “restore” in Galatians 6:1. Is there a way to see all related words at once?

Basically the question is this: Is there a way to display all lemmas sharing a common root? And fortunately for us the answer is yes! Actually there are different ways to accomplish the same task, but in this blog, I’ll focus on the Guide, Bible Word Study:

  • Open an interlinear Bible such as the ESV to Ephesians 4:12 (A)
  • Right-click on the word “equip” (B)
  • Select from the left side of the menu the Greek lemma. (Remember, a lemma is the dictionary form of a word, and it’s always identified with the ring icon.) (C)
  • Select from the right side of the menu Bible Word Study (D)

  • Notice several things in the Root section: (E)
    • the root word from which the lemma under study is derived (F)
    • all lemmas derived from this root (G)
    • the lemma with the orange bullet indicates the lemma under study (H)
  • Click a lemma in the Root section to generate a Bible Word Study report for that word (I)

  • Use the Translation section in Bible Word Study to see all occurrences of the lemma under study (J)

Keep in mind that just because lemmas share a common root does not mean they share a common meaning. Make sure to examine the context in which a lemma is used to discern its precise meaning or usage.
