How to Find Everywhere the New Testament Uses the Old Testament

Years ago as a young Christian I was involved in a discipleship class. I remember very well studying Satan tempting Jesus in Matthew 4. My mentor emphasized how Jesus quoted Deuteronomy to counter the enticements of the enemy. He explained this wasn’t the only time Jesus quoted Scripture, but rather he often used the Old Testament in his life and ministry. My teacher concluded by encouraging the other students and me to do likewise.

This simple lesson also taught me to be observant of the presence of Old Testament passages in the New Testament. For this observation I usually relied on the embedded cross-references supplied by the publisher of whatever English Bible I was reading.

Now, however, identifying the Old Testament in the New is much easier and more thorough with a Logos 7 new Interactive called New Testament Use of the Old Testament.

For example, follow these simple steps to see how easy it is to discover the places Jesus used Deuteronomy:

  • Choose Tools | New Testament Use of the Old Testament (A)

  • Click Jesus in the Speaker (NT) section in the sidebar (B)

  • Click Deuteronomy in the Book (Source) section in the sidebar (C)

  • Notice on the right all of the verses from Deuteronomy that Jesus quoted, cited, or alluded to! (D)
