Empowering God’s People for Ministry

During the Protestant Reformation, a concept arose to prominence that has deep implications on our theology: the priesthood of all believers. This is the conviction that we are as priests before God, with access to the Father through his Son, without need of a merely human mediator.

This concept came implicit with two claims: that the Bible, God’s Word, would be returned to the hands of the people, and that the ministry would be returned as well. This is what Dr. Greg Ogden calls “vertical” and “horizontal” priesthood—vertical as we have access to God, and horizontal as we minister to those around us.

In Logos Mobile Education: ED201 Empowering God’s People for Ministry, Dr. Ogden delivers practical insight on restoring the ministry of believers, with this reformational foundation. His driving question is, “How do we see the ministry of the whole people of God come alive today?”

Everyone is called to ministry

Of course Dr. Ogden is quick to affirm that we are all called to ministry. He says:

. . . we’ve defined ministry through the lens of clericalism and said, ‘Ministry is what pastors do for us.’ This has led to what I call a ‘dependency model’ in ministry where the church is dependent upon the ministry that the pastors do to the people or for the people, and the people are dependent then upon the pastors.

He goes on to state that we need to adopt a view of the church that is more organic, where ministry is what everybody is called to. He says, “We need an equipping model of ministry, which positions pastors to help the saints discover the ministries that they are called to, to equip the saints for the work of ministry for the building up of the body of Christ.”

ED201The majority of this course is spent fleshing out that horizontal priesthood, as we learn what the Bible says about how we minister and care of those around us. After laying a biblical foundation, Dr. Ogden takes the principles established and delves into immensely practical content, including a response to the question of “calling.” He communicates a theology of small groups and lays a vision for biblical-ministry teams, life-transformation groups, disciple-making groups, and more. This is helpful, relevant material that anyone, church leader and person in the pew alike, will greatly benefit from.
