How to Create and Search a Passage List

In response to a recent blog about locating where Jesus speaks about the kingdom, a Logos user emailed me the following power-user tip that I wanted to pass along to you:

I create a Passage List of verses with Jesus as the Speaker in Reported Speech. Then in the future I search that list for the words I want.

On the whole, this is a great tip that I want to pass along to you. There is a word of caution that I’ll explain at the end of the blog.

For this example, let’s imagine we’re studying Matthew 6:33 where Jesus says seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness (ESV). So we want to locate verses in which Jesus speaks about righteousness.

To apply the Logos user’s power-user trick try this:

  • Open a Bible with the interlinear option such as the ESV (A)
  • Navigate to a passage in which Jesus is speaking such as Matthew 5:3 (B)
  • Right-click on one of Jesus’ words (C)
  • Select from the right side of the context menu Jesus SPEAKER (D)
  • Select from the left side of the context menu Search this resource (E)

  • Notice the Search panel opens with all of the verses containing Reported Speech in which Jesus is labeled as the Speaker (F)

  • Choose the Search panel menu (G)
  • Select Save as Passage List (H)

  • Notice a new Passage List is created with the search results (I)

  • Rename the list and close the list if you desire
  • Navigate in the Bible to Matthew 6:33 (J)
  • Right click on the word righteousness (K)
  • Select from the right side of the context menu the Greek lemma (the one with the ring icon) (L)
  • Select from the left side of the context menu Search this resource (M)

  • Notice a Search panel opens listing all of the verses containing the Greek lemma (N)

  • Select the Verse Range drop-down list (O)
  • Select the newly created Passage List (P)

The Search panel now lists all of the verses containing BOTH Jesus as the Speaker and the Greek lemma! (Q)

Now here’s the word of caution: theoretically a verse in the search results could contain Jesus as Speaker and the Greek lemma, but the lemma is outside Jesus’ words in the verse. You will, of course, discover any such verses as you go through the results.

As long as you’re aware of this possibility, the Passage List search is great time-saver for future searches because you don’t have to search for Jesus the Speaker. You just execute your lemma, word,  phrase, etc. search and then adjust the verse range to your Passage List!
