Celebrating the Life and Work of Dr. Tony Ash

Today’s post was written by David Swearingen, a longtime friend and colleague of Dr. Tony Ash.

Dr. Anthony Lee “Tony” Ash, author and narrator of Walking With C.S. Lewis, a new Lexham Press video curriculum, died after a short illness on December 6, 2017; he was 86 years old.

Dr. Ash was a professor of Bible, missions, and ministry for more than 40 years at Abilene Christian University (ACU) and was the author of more than a dozen books. Dr. Ash was also a popular speaker and author on both biblical studies as well as on the life and works of writer C.S. Lewis. Ash retired in May 2014 from ACU after 40 years on the faculty of its College of Biblical Studies. For nearly 50 years, he researched, read, studied, lectured and wrote about noted theologian C.S. “Jack” Lewis.

“No other author has approached theologian C.S. Lewis as Tony Ash was able to do. His interpretations of Lewis and his writings will help you to enrich your faith and gain new Christian insights,” said Dr. Royce Money, chancellor of Abilene Christian University,. Dr. Money was also a colleague and lifelong friend of Dr. Ash’s.

The abiding influence of Lewis on Dr. Ash’s life and teaching is evident in his most recent project, Walking With C.S. Lewis, a video series produced in collaboration with Lexham Press and with Ryan Pemberton, who wrote and edited a Leader’s Guide and an accompanying Companion Guide based on the video series, to help Bible study groups and university students better understand Lewis’ life and best-known written works. As Dr. Ash neared his retirement from ACU in 2014, his faculty colleagues encouraged him to develop the series, and Walking With C.S. Lewis was published by Lexham Press in mid-January.

Tony was such a wonderful storyteller. His solid Christian faith and his passion for C.S. Lewis’ works energized him in the classroom. He could quote long passages without missing a word. In particular, he loved The Chronicles of Narnia, and when he told those stories his face lit up with expressions of excitement, consternation, fear, and, most of all, delight.

Lexham Press joins with Dr. Ash’s family, friends, colleagues and students in mourning his passing—while celebrating that his teaching legacy and love of Lewis will continue with a new generation of students through the Walking with C.S. Lewis video series.
