Enjoy Your Books, Even outside Cell Phone Range

The road hadn’t been groomed yet that spring. I steered our little hatchback around most of the potholes, but nobody misses them all. A landslide washed out one of the of the sharper s-curves, but it wasn’t fresh and the sun was out, so the debris was starting to crust over. We managed to crawl over it. A huge spruce tree cut the road about a quarter mile from the trailhead, so we walked in from there.

I set my phone to airplane mode as we hiked away from the car.

My wife and I spent two days in the backcountry that weekend, enjoying some of the best mountain vistas anywhere in North America. We like to do that now and then. To escape—to walk deep into the woods, beyond the reach of any Wi-Fi network or cellular service and live outside our routine for a while.

Whenever we venture outside our phone carrier’s coverage map we have to leave things behind—but we never have to leave behind our theological library. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The Logos mobile app lets you to carry all your books in your pocket.

Imagine trying to do that without the Logos app. My favorite single-volume commentary, The New Bible Commentary, weighs in at a hulking four pounds and 1,317 pages. That’s heavier than my tent. No way I’m carrying it with me on a backpacking trip or to the beach. If I owned a print edition of that book, it probably wouldn’t ever leave my office.

But I did have it with me on that trip because I downloaded it and the ESV to my phone, so I could read Psalm 128:1 and it’s blessing for those who fear the Lord. I could read about the mountain of the house of the Lord in Isaiah 2:2 while we camped in a snowy meadow between Mt. Baker and the Twin Sisters.

Download your favorite books to your device in the Logos app, so you can enjoy them on your next trip outside your phone carrier’s coverage map.

If you’re not sure how to download your Logos resources to your mobile device, here’s a quick tutorial.

  • Fire up your app
  • Swipe from the left side of the screen to reveal the app menu. There you’ll find a list of books you have access to in your app.
  • Tap the information icon for any book to learn more about it. When you do, you’ll find a download button.
  • Tap the download button.

Once a book is downloaded, its information icon will be solid blue like you see below for my copies of the ESV and NBC.

Next weekend, my wife and I are taking another trip into the mountains. Without the Logos app, I’d have to put my Galatians study on hold. With the Logos app, I carry all my books without adding a single ounce more weight.

Turn Your Logos App into a Reader’s Bible

Logos_300x300The Bible is meant to be read, and the Bible is also meant to be studied. But a good study Bible isn’t always a good reading Bible.

A good study Bible includes footnotes, section headings, cross-references, and sometimes study notes. All that markup is very useful for Bible study, but it can get in the way of Bible reading.

So a good reader’s Bible is simple—containing little more than beautifully arranged, flowing text.

As Logos users know, toggling back and forth between studying and reading modes in Logos 6 is easy. With a single click, you can hide all of those helpful annotations, section headings, links, and even chapter and verse numbers.

Even more, that same feature you’ve been loving in your desktop software is also available in your iOS app.

Here’s how to turn your Logos app into a reader’s Bible:

bibletextonly

On your iPad or iPhone, tap the settings menu and look for the “Bible Text Only” section. Tap that to reveal all of your options.

You can turn on or off various annotations, like chapter and verse numbers, footnote indicators, non-Bible text (like section headings), and more. Quickly turn these things on or off to make your app conducive to study or reading—whichever you’re doing at that moment.

Enjoy the Bible Text Only view in your iOS app today!

Select Scrolling Options in Your Logos Bible App

Logos_300x300The Logos Bible app is your own personal library—it can house thousands of books. That’s why it was designed to read like a book. Instead of scrolling vertically like an online article, you simply swipe the screen horizontally like you’re turning the page.

Although many of you enjoy the swipe navigation, feedback in app reviews (iOS and Android) and the mobile-apps suggestion forum made it clear that others prefer to scroll.

Well, we have some good news!

You now have a vertical-scrolling option in your Logos Bible app.

We rolled out the scrolling feature in December 2014 as part of version 4.4. So far, many app users are loving this new option—and you can try right now in your app, too!

How to switch to vertical scrolling

Your app defaults to swipe navigation when you first download the Logos Bible app, but it’s easy to make the switch to vertical scrolling.

On iOS:

  1. Open any resource in your Logos app.
  2. Tap the screen once to bring up your options.
  3. Tap the “Aa” symbol in your toolbar.
  4. Tap the option for “Scrolling View.”

On Android:

  1. Open the settings menu.
  2. Check “Scroll View.”

The vertical scrolling option is also available in the Faithlife Study Bible app, the Noet app, the Vyrso app, and the Verbum app—which are all free in your app store of choice!

Get the free Logos Bible app today, then set your scrolling preference and try it out!

Logos Bible App: The Best App for Bible Study

iphone_header

In November 2009, we released the Logos iPhone app, and by 2011, it was joined by the Android version. Over the last five and a half years, our developers have made huge strides in creating apps that allow you to take your Bible study to the next level.

If you don’t already have it, download the Logos Bible app for iOS or Android today!

Take your library anywhere

Loaded with smart tools that help you explore important ideas on the go, the Logos Bible app gives you the best in mobile Bible study. You can sync your notes across all devices and discover biblical insights with one touch. You can also grow your library with the all-new Tablet Bundle—eight classics specifically selected for reading on your mobile device.

The best Bible study app

Whether you use an iOS or Android device, we are confident that you will love the Logos Bible app! Our users’ triumphs become our inspiration for developing the best app for Bible study.

Here’s what a few of you have said recently:

AWESOME!

I’m 71 1/2 years old and November of 2013 was my first introduction to a tablet. Hallelujah! I love it! Who said they can’t teach an old dog new tricks? The Logos Bible app is awesome! Everything you need for a comprehensive Bible study. I’m amazed at the technology God has allowed us to have. It takes me a little longer to get familiar with the different tools, but once I get it I’m gone with the wind! . . .

Greatest all-inclusive mobile seminary!

I have been a Logos user for nearly 20 years now and they keep getting better! What I love most about the Android app is that I can download my entire library on all my devices and laptops. Whether I am in church, at work, in my study, or at work, the powerful and portable seminary is with me! The engineers are always working hard at ensuring the latest patches and upgrades keep the tool up to date with the best data possible.

Amazing . . . most used app (study, teaching, learning)

The Logos app has reinvented the way I study. The seamless continuity throughout Logos on my Mac to my iPhone really helps. The fact that I can do a word study in seconds, look up teaching outlines and points on the fly, and have a library of Bibles and books all in my iPhone makes this the most powerful and useful app, period. Only software (Logos for Mac and Logos app) I would consider for growing in my knowledge of Christ and bringing the message of Christ to others. It would be irresponsible not to use the tools and technology God has given us to more efficiently divide the Word of God, effectively present the gospel of Christ, and help others in their walk with Christ. This is the app.

Tell us your story

How have you used the Logos Bible app? Has it helped you dig deeper into the Word by uncovering original-language definitions or running a helpful Passage Guide to give insight into a specific verse? Has it helped you stay consistent in your Bible study? Whatever it is, we want to know!

Review your iOS app, or review your Android app.

Help us make the app even better

We’re constantly improving the Logos Bible app so you can have an enjoyable and seamless experience. If you have any suggestions, please let us know! Simply post them to our Logos Mobile Apps UserVoice site. This the best way to let our development team know what’s important to you!

Take Your Logos-Edition Books Everywhere

Your Logos-edition books travel like no other books you own. For serious study, use Logos 6 on your Mac or PC to unlock the full potential of your Logos resources. And when life pulls you away from your desk, access those same books on your phone or tablet through the Logos Bible! app.

Download your books to your devices

With the Logos app on your phone or tablet, you can read or study from wherever your life takes you, even if you venture far from a Wi-Fi network or cell tower. Just take a moment to download the books you want to use while you’re offline.

Here’s how:

Launch the Logos app, and navigate to the library view:

librarymenu
The information card on each book contains a download button so you can easily download individual resources. In addition to the books I’m reading at the moment (or Mobile Ed courses I’m working through), I like to have the ESV, The NET Bible Notes, The Bible Knowledge Commentary, and the Lexham Bible Dictionary on my mobile device at all times.

IMG_0295

Pro tip: The “Download All” button in the top right does exactly what you think. But if you use the search box to filter your library, “Download All” will only download your search results. For example, if I want to take my ethics books with me on a road trip, I could filter the library with “mytag:ethics” and use “Download All” to keep all of those books on my device.

You can use 12 different search filters to navigate your library:

  • author:
  • abbrev:
  • epubdate:
  • lang:
  • mytag:
  • pubdate:
  • publisher:
  • rating:
  • subject:
  • series:
  • title:
  • type:

Use these filters to quickly find and download the exact resources you’d like to have at your fingertips all the time.

Cultivate a Big-Picture View of Scripture: This App Makes It Easier

every-day-bible-appThe Bible is a big book. Many people read it faithfully every day for years, and still never develop a big-picture view of it.

For example:

  • How does the story of the Exodus foreshadow the earthly ministry of Jesus?
  • Why would God direct the prophet Hosea to marry a prostitute?

The reading plan and devotional built into the Every Day Bible app make answers to these and other difficult questions more accessible. Pairing Old and New Testament passages with a selection of biblical poetry each day, Every Day Bible invites you to develop a big-picture view of scripture, discovering connections between passages that you may not have noticed before.

And it’s not too late to jump into a year-long journey through scripture with Every Day Bible. You can start today at EveryDayBible.com, or—if you prefer—by downloading the Every Day Bible app for your Android or iOS device. The app is brilliantly simple—when you fire it up each day, you’ll jump right into the text with nothing new to learn or figure out.

So if this is your year to cultivate a big-picture view of scripture, the Every Day Bible app is ready to help.

Get this exceptional app—designed by the same team that brought you Logos 6—for free right now!

Keep Your Most Important New Year’s Resolution with Every Day Bible

every-day-bible-appIt’s resolution-making season. And to ensure your most important resolution—the one about daily Bible reading—is also the easiest to keep, we’d like you to meet the free Every Day Bible app.

Built on the reading-plan framework of Connect the Testaments, a popular calendar devotional written by Faithlife’s own John Barry and Rebecca Van Noord, Every Day Bible presents you with three manageable passages each day—one from the Old Testament, one from the New Testament, and one from the books of poetry. This approach will lead you through the entire Bible in a year. Along the way, you’ll garner a big-picture view of Scripture aided by Barry’s and Van Noord’s insights delivered in daily devotional passages.

The Every Day Bible app puts that powerful content in your pocket, so you can maintain your resolution to read Scripture even when the next year takes you unexpected places.

We kept it simple, so there’s nothing extra to learn and you can jump right into your Scripture readings each day. The result is a daily-reading app that’s easy to use. You still have total control over which types of text you’d like to read: use the settings menu to turn sections on and off if you’d prefer to focus on one particular type of text.

Each day is topped off with a piece of Bible Screen art from one of the verses covered that day. Our in-house professional design team has been illustrating a different Bible verse every day for years. Their work has taken many forms—apps, T-shirts, magnets, postcards—and we couldn’t resist putting it here to inspire you in your daily Scripture reading. And if you’d like to share the art, you can do that with just a click.

We think you’re going to love the brilliantly simple Every Day Bible app. Download it for free today, and start keeping that resolution to read Scripture.
