Create Custom Notifications on Logos.com

We’re adding new products to Logos.com every day. If you subscribe to the blog and a handful of email lists, you’ll probably hear about most of them. But we know that “probably” isn’t good enough—you want to be sure. Luckily, Logos.com has custom RSS feeds. Use them to set personal alerts for the products and product types you care about most.

Start at Logos.com/Products/Search. In the sidebar on the left, you’ll find 13 different ways to segment your library (a), such as topic, resource type, author, genre, and more. In the header, you’ll see a dropdown menu that invites you to sort your search results by seven different criteria (b), like price, title, and popularity.

rssfeeds1

Using these two features, you can access RSS feeds for the specific product types you care about. Here are some example alerts you could create:

Once you’ve created the search for which you’d like a custom alert, right-click the RSS icon in the header and copy the link’s address.

rssfeeds2

Paste the address into your RSS reader of choice—whenever we add a new product that fits your search parameters, you’ll be among the first to know.

What alerts have you set? Let us know in comments.

6 Ways Faithlife Makes Small Groups Better

faithlife-churchesJoining a small group is simultaneously the most rewarding and the most challenging part of many people’s church experience. Those who make the jump to hosting a group find their rewards and challenges multiplied. We built the digital faith community at Faithlife.com to minimize the friction that makes small groups difficult, allowing you to focus on the rewards.

Here are six ways Faithlife makes small groups better:

1. Study together—Something powerful happens when a whole community rallies around a passage of Scripture. God highlights different facets of the passage for each of us; we learn best when we learn together. With dozens of reading plans to choose from, you’re sure to fine one for every season.

2. Pray for one another—Faithlife makes it possible to share what’s on your heart without venting to the whole world. Privacy controls let you dictate exactly who sees what you post, so your messages reach as far as you want—and no farther.

3. Plan events—When is the group meeting? Where? Who’s bringing food? The Faithlife calendar tool takes all the guesswork out of planning your small group meetings. Plan all your meetings in the calendar’s tab to avoid confusion, and add the calendar widget to the sidebar to be sure that everyone knows the plan.

4. Share notesCommunity Notes remain one of the best-loved features in the Faithlife Study Bible app, perhaps because it’s so easy to share your notes with your faith community on Faithlife. The Documents tab stores notes of all kinds, including study notes made in your Faithlife app, setlists from Proclaim, and much more. You can upload discussion questions ahead of time, or pass around handouts without killing trees.

5. Protect privacy—Faithlife offers three levels of involvement to every group member: member, follower, and observer. At the member level, users are fully visible, and can post to the group. At the follower level, users can’t post, but they can like member-posted content. At the observer level, users can watch what’s going on, but their personal information isn’t revealed to anyone else. (This can be very helpful for anonymous support groups.) Use these three levels to keep folks involved and protect their privacy.

6. Send newsletters—With this new feature, you can create and send group newsletters right from Faithlife.com. Look for this new feature on the Newsletters tab, and learn to use it on the Faithlife blog.

The best part: you get all these benefits for a grand total of $0. Faithlife.com is free—there’s no cost to create or join a group. And you can compound its value by accessing your Faithlife group through the Faithlife Study Bible app—the world’s largest, most powerful study Bible.

Easily Manage Your Devices and Downloads

iPhoneWith Logos 5, you can access most of your library on multiple devices. Now, it’s easier than ever to manage your devices and downloads.

Managing Your Devices

When you download any free app from Logos (Logos Bible Software, Faithlife Study Bible, or Vyrso) on your iOS or Android device, and sign in with your Logos.com account, your device will instantly be logged on your account page. Under the heading “Mobile Devices,” you’ll see all your devices and downloaded apps.

Device MgmtAbove, you can see the apps I have on my Sony tablet and Motorola phone. Let’s say I have one tablet for home and one for work, and I get them confused. When I hover over either of the devices, I’m given the option to edit their names to make it easier to remember which is which.

Device MGMTII

If I were to lose, break, or sell either of these items, I could simply hover over the device and choose to “Remove.”

Managing Your Downloads

I like to keep a couple books downloaded to read when I’m lounging around or have some time to kill. Managing those downloads is a cinch. Here are three ways you can manage your downloads:

1. Download books directly from the device

Click the information icon (i) to the right of any book in your library and you’ll get a pop-up with a button to download the resource to your device (iOS or Android).

2. Download books from your order page

When you purchase a single volume, you’ll be taken to the order summary page. If you have devices on file and want to download your new book, you can do so here.

Even if it’s a book you purchased a while ago, you can go to your order page, scroll down to the order history, click the order number, and choose where to download it.

3. Download books from Logos 5

My favorite way to manage my downloads is directly in Logos 5. Click on the Library icon, right-click on the bar to choose the information displayed, and check “Devices.” Once you choose for your library to display devices, you can see the books already downloaded.

If there’s a particular item in your Logos 5 library you want to download, open the book, and then click the information icon.

5 Free Ways to Share Your Faith Online

ShareimageSharing Scripture with friends and loved ones has never been so easy—and Logos is working to make it even easier.

Every morning we post Scripture art to a few of our Facebook pages. We’ve received quite a few requests to make these images available for sharing, reusing, or downloading. We even had one fan enter our photo contest with the help of our Verse of the Day images. Well, good news—there are plenty of ways to share this free art, as well as other social content.

Here are five free ways to share Scripture online:

1. Follow Logos on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, and Instagram.

  • Repost, tweet, +1, and pin Scripture art and verses to encourage your friends and followers.

2. Download images from our Facebook and Instagram profiles.

  • Save these as your Twitter backgrounds, and add them to your Flickr albums or other image galleries.

3. Use the free Verse of the Day plugin on your blog.

  • It works with WordPress and Blogger.

4. Set up a group in Faithlife, and enable the free Verse of the Day plugin for your group.

  • Faithlife groups now feature the Verse of the Day plugin in the right sidebar, along with your group’s reading plan.

5. Download free Facebook Timeline covers.

  • Visit Twibbon and choose between a few free Facebook Timeline covers. Then tweet and share Twibbon with your friends!

Dr. Timothy Keller: Faithlife Study Bible Contributor

The Faithlife Study Bible is always adding rich content—most recently, “Old Testament Law and the Charge of Inconsistency,” an article by New York Times bestselling author and Redeemer Presbyterian church senior pastor Dr. Timothy Keller. Dr. Keller’s focus on Jesus’ character, ministry, and work has influenced the Christian community at large and resulted in Redeemer’s growth from 50 to over 5,000 members.

Dr. Keller’s FSB article takes a look at common objections to Christianity that stem from perceived inconsistencies in the Old Testament Law. Old Testament prohibitions no longer practiced today include:

  • Eating raw meat, pork, or shellfish
  • Executing people for breaking the Sabbath
  • Wearing clothes woven with two kinds of materials

Yet, of course, the Old Testament is full of guidelines that we should still follow today. Find out how Dr. Keller addresses these perceived inconsistencies in the Faithlife Study Bible!

Get the Faithlife Study Bible free through March 2014 to access Dr. Keller’s article, along with other thought-provoking Bible study articles.

After you unlock the Faithlife Study Bible and download it onto your mobile app, you’ll find a link directly to Dr. Keller’s article from the in-app news feed “Content Update in the Faithlife Study Bible.”

Organize Your Christian Community with Faithlife’s Calendars and Events

Faithlife’s latest update is a huge step forward for your online Christian community. With the addition of events and calendars, you can organize all your group outings, celebrations, and services, all in one place.

Create a Faithlife Event

I just set up an Apples to Apples board game tournament at church. Setting up the event was simple. I clicked the “New event” button (example) to get started and then picked a name for the event (example). When it comes to choosing an event type, there’s a dropdown menu with 19 choices, like:

  • Birthday party
  • Class
  • Confirmation
  • Lecture
  • Graduation
  • General

Once I had the event named and scheduled, I filled out some details for everyone who’d been invited (example). Then all I had to do was send out invites. I could invite entire groups or choose individuals from specific groups (example).

Create Group-Specific Events

Need to create an event for just one of your groups? Simply:

  1. Go to your Faithlife group
  2. Click the Calendar tab (example)
  3. Create a new calendar event (you can even set recurring events, such as church services, small groups, and Bible studies) (example)
  4. View your events either as a list or in calendar view (example)
