Why dictionaries and encyclopedias?

There are a few reasons dictionaries and encyclopedias are critical to all students of the Bible—and why they’re especially useful in Logos.

  1. They provide a wider scope of knowledge than you’d get in a commentary, so you can easily get up to speed on a variety of facts, definitions, and historical events related to your study.
  2. They are typically more objective than commentaries, providing multiple perspectives on a topic or issue, so you learn the facts first, not necessarily an interpretation.
  3. In Logos, insights from dictionaries and encyclopedias are handed to you, even when you’re not looking for them. When you study a passage or topic, Logos will automatically reveal relevant insights from your reference works—which paper books simply can’t do.

With that in mind, here are a few reference works you really ought to consider:

Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary (6 vols.) – Complete and unabridged, the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary is the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and authoritative reference work in the field. “Nothing of its kind exists in any language,” declared Walter Harrelson in the Journal of Biblical Literature.

New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible (5 vols.) – The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible (5 vols.) is a behemoth work of contemporary biblical scholarship. You’ll find notes on a comprehensive range of topics, including the Old and New Testaments, the Deuterocanonical books, and contextual studies of the ancient Near East, the Greco-Roman worlds, and more.

Dictionary of Theological TermsThe Dictionary of Theological Terms is ideal for Christians of all learning levels. Whether you’re learning theological terms for the first time or are a veteran pastor needing a refresher, easily navigate over 500 pages of convenient summations of Christian doctrine.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Collection – The other resources mentioned explain God’s word; the Encyclopaedia Britannica explains God’s world. This gold standard for reference work is ready to boost your research in Logos. In the Encyclopaedia Britannica Collection, you’ll get more than 99,000 articles and 20,000 media resources to make your research richer.

Explore these and many more works to enrich your Bible study.
