How to Instantly See How Many Times a Lemma Is Used in a Passage

The old adage says, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Pictures many times communicate at a glance what words cannot. That can also be true of Logos searching.

Imagine this scenario: we’re reading about “righteousness” in Romans 1:17. After searching for the Greek lemma translated “righteousness,” we want to see a graphic showing the distribution of this word in the New Testament.

To accomplish that, let’s give this a go:

  • Open an English Bible with the interlinear option, such as the ESV, to Romans 1:17 (A)
  • Right click on the word righteousness (B)
  • Select from the right side of the Context menu the Greek lemma (the word with the ring icon) (C)
  • Select from the left side of the Context menu Search this resource (D)

  • Notice the Search panel opens displaying in “word form” all of the occurrences of this lemma in the New Testament (E)
  • Click Graph results on the Search panel’s toolbar (F)

  • Notice a Graph Bible Search Results panel opens with “pictures” of the results (G)
  • Select at the bottom of the panel a type of graphic such as Pie Chart (H)
  • Notice you now have a graphic of the results showing instantly at a glance a high concentration of this lemma in Romans! (I)

That’s great. Now, what about word clouds for a passage/Bible book/other resource. I know there are word clouds for ‘important’ words according to the Logos tagging team. I’d like to be able to see them for myself with the tedium of copy, paste, clean-up copy and paste again to get the cloud.
I hope it can be done – if not, is it coming in Logos 8?

  2. Hello, I’m not getting an option to get “Graph results” – it’s greyed out and will only show up when I do a Morph search.

    Thanks!

  3. Obasola Bolumole says:

Good day, Morris, I just followed the MP seminars. I have also immediately tried to download the Ephesians commentary by Dr. Osborne, but it always fails to download at 98%. Please is there something I still need to do or am not getting about following the seminars ?

  4. Elmer Cummings says:

Been to two of the Camp Logos. Loved them! I tried the example using “Graph Results” but I’m unable to do it. “Graph Results” is grayed out not allowing me to select it.

I have Logos 7 and am a Logos Now subscriber.

    Any ideas?

  5. Elmer Cummings says:

I love all the tips. I’ve been to Camp Logos on two occasions and have learned things each time.

I own Logos 7 and am a Logos Now subscriber.

However, when I follow the steps you outline “Graph results” (F in your instructions) is grayed out and I am unable to select it.

    Please advise.
