Get Instant Help Outlining Biblical Books

Perhaps you’re a:

  • Pastor preaching through a book in the Bible
  • Teacher guiding your pupils through a book study
  • Student of the Bible wanting to get a grasp of a biblical book

So for whatever reason you want to see the big picture of Genesis, Exodus, or any book in the Bible. Sometimes seeing how others have outlined a book will assist you in getting a bird’s eye view yourself.

Well, tucked away inside the software is a little tool that allows you to see at a glance various “outlines” of a book. So let’s take a look at this big picture aid called Compare Pericopes:

  • Choose Tools | Passage Analysis
  • Click Compare Pericopes at the bottom of the panel (A)
  • Click the Pericope Sets drop down list (B)
  • Select the Bibles you’d like to see in the report (please note, not all of your Bibles are available in this tool) (C)
  • Type a verse in the Reference box such as Philippians 1:1 (D)

  • Press the Enter key to jump to that location
  • Note these general observations:
    • Each selected Bible in a column by itself (E)
    • Verse numbers in the left margin (F)
    • Perciope (sections in the Bible) headings in the various columns (these titles are coming from Bible publishers and form “outlines” of books in the Bible) (G)

  • Note these specific observations:
    • Philippians 1:1-2 is:
      • Referred to as Greeting in the ESV (H) and LEB (I) and Greetings from Paul in the NLT (J)
      • Included in Thanksgiving in the NASB (K)
    • Philippians 1:3-11 is:
      • Referred to as Thanksgiving and Prayer in the ESV (L) and Paul’s Thanksgiving and Prayer in the NLT (M)
      • Divided into two pericopes in the LEB: Thanksgiving (N) and Prayer for Spiritual Maturity (O)
      • Included in Thanksgiving in the NASB (P)

Again for emphasis, the purpose of this tool is to assist you in seeing the big picture or possible outline of a book. It may help you plan a sermon series or develop lesson plans for your Bible study class.
