Find Everywhere Jesus Discusses a Subject

A friend and fellow Logos user called me recently with the following scenario:

I’m studying in Matthew 12 where Jesus referred to the Pharisees as a “brood of vipers.” It made me think of the fact that Jesus often referenced animals in his speech. How can I locate occurrences of His mentioning animals?

The answer is found in a Bible search utilizing 2 datasets: Reported Speech and Biblical Word Senses. To set up the search keep in mind a team at Faithlife identified and tagged speech (conversation) in Scripture with both the Speaker and Addressee in the speech. These diligent workers also suggested contextual meanings (senses) for the words in the Bible.

So the following search will locate verses in which Jesus is the Speaker using words with the Sense, animal.

  • Click the Search icon in the upper left of the program
  • Select Bible as the search type (A)
  • Select from the drop down list a verse range (B)
  • Select from the resource to search drop down list a Bible with the interlinear option like the NASB (C)
  • Place this search string in the Find box: {Speaker <Person Jesus>} AND <Sense animal> (D)
  • Press the Enter key to generate the search results
  • Click Aligned to justify the results for easier viewing (E)

After working awhile with the Bible Sense Lexicon on the Tools menu, pretty soon you can locate where Jesus spoke about most any subject:

For example in the above search query change animal to:

  • vegetation to discover where Jesus used plants and trees in His teaching
  • money to see what Jesus said about finances
  • relationship person to find where Jesus discusses fathers, mothers, brothers,, etc.

    Incredible! Thanks, Morris. Thanks, Logos.

  2. Dear Morris Proctor, I did my homework and everything went fine, but when I changed animals for righteousness the system does not merit this word but with the word justice and so,in the Sermon on the Mount texts on this subject do not appear i the list. I was careful to choose the NKJV for the certainty that in these texts the word that appears is righteousness. What do you suggest?

I’m sorry but this did NOT work for me. It came up with 0. I checked and re checked everything.

      • Hello Mr. Elmore, It did not work for me either when I tried typing it in from his example and I was sure I had everything correct. My result was 0 as well. I scrolled through the canned search options and under “LABELED DATA” I chose the option that found every time Abraham spoke and started editing the search criteria from their. First I replaced Abraham with Jesus and it worked, then I added the AND and it worked perfectly. I am not sure what magic occurred or what I was missing but it worked and will be a great addition to Bible study and sermon preparation. I hope you can get it to work on your end.

    • Hello Mr. Banks, I was not able to get the desired results by changing the word animal to righteousness either. There were very few results using that method. However when I searched using “words-of-christ:righteousness” It found 25 results in 21 verses including the references from the Sermon on the Mount (using KJV).

It would be nice to know how Morris Procter answered the comments when their search didn’t work. Having written database software since the CPM80 days in dBase 2 I would enjoy his comments.

  4. Way too challenging. What a shame Logos isn’t easier and simpler to use for such a basic search.
