Why You May Be Misreading Scripture, & What to Do about It

A few years ago, researchers discovered that our memories might not be as reliable as we think. In fact, every time you recall a memory, your brain distorts it a little. Like making a copy of a copy of a copy, you reproduce the event in your mind’s eye based on earlier versions of the memory.

You aren’t remembering the event, you’re remembering the memory.

That makes the memories we most often recall least like the events that produced them. In other words, the more vivid the memory, the less accurate it likely is.

Something similar happens with biblical stories. When we come to familiar passages, like the Easter story, we are tempted to rely more on our memory of the story and less on the text of Scripture itself.

We interpret through the lens of our modern experience and the traditions that have grown up around the story. We recall the gist of the narrative and the details are lost. We forget that the story arose in a specific religious and cultural milieu that should inform the way we read it.

But when we re-examine those familiar stories, we rediscover their significance and power. For instance, when you truly understand what a first-century tomb was like, you gain a better sense of what Mary and Martha would have experienced that first Easter morning.   1. It’s fair to say also that a memory of an event is never as accurate as the event itself. What is remembered may even be an inaccurate, partial, and in any case interpretative perception of the event. The more we equate what we remember with the event itself, the less likely we are to see it with fresh eyes the next time around. This is we can so often find “confirmation” in passages of the theology we are already committed to or want to find in it. The passages are seen through coloured lenses and that colouration is then thought to be that of the passage itself rather than that of the lenses. Reading the Scriptures through Western eyes has played and continues to play a significant role in shaping Christian theology.

  2. I agree wholeheartedly. Too often we come to the text (especially familiar ones) and don’t even pay attention to some of the details, because we “already know the story”. The more we “know” the less aware we become to things that are central to the understanding of a passage, but not as popular or easy to remember.
    My question is, on the topic of memory you talk about, how do we handle the reality of most of scripture depending on the memory of those writing. I know we believe in Inspiration, and I don’t want to imply it’s not enough to provide accurate accounts, but from a historical point of view, what would you say is our best argument in favor of the accuracy of those accounts?
