How to Hit the Ground Running in Logos 7

hit-ground-running

For most of us, our first introduction to Logos Bible Software is the Home Page with its Passage/Topic box. By entering a biblical reference or subject in the box and clicking GO we can launch in-depth Bible study.

Also, if you’ve been to Camp Logos or watched the QuickStart videos you’ve heard me say the GO icon opens the Default Home Page Passage or Topic Study Screen. In other words, if we used GO, we had to take and learn to love what the software opened for us; we couldn’t customize the Home Page layouts.

That is, until Logos 7! With the latest version, we can combine the ease of use of GO with the power of customization, resulting in a quick and personalized Logos desktop.

Give this a go:

  • Open the Home Page (A)
  • Type Matthew 28:19 in the Passage/Topic box (B)
  • Click GO (C)

1

  • Notice Logos opens the Default Home Page Passage Study Screen consisting of 5 tiles (D)

2

  • Imagine you only want the Passage Guide and Preferred Bible panels open in your Home Page passage study; so close everything except these 2 panels (E)

3

  • Choose the panel menu on the Passage Guide (F)
  • Select Link Set A (G)

4

  • Choose the Layouts menu (H)
  • Expand Home Page Layouts (I)
  • Rest the cursor on Passage (J)
  • Click the arrow that appears to the right (K)
  • Select Replace with current layout (L)

5.1

  • Close all the tiles and panels on the screen
  • Open the Home Page (M)
  • Type Acts 5:20 in the Passage/Topic box (N)
  • Click GO (O)

6.1

  • Notice your new customized Home Page Passage Study Screen opens (P)

7.1

You’ve just combined the convenience of the GO button with the power of customization, resulting in your own personalized desktop!

Please note there are 5 primary ways to initiate Bible study from the Home Page:

  • Bible Reading Plan
  • Lectionary
  • Passage
  • Search
  • Topic

You can create a custom Home Page Layout for any or all of them, with each layout consisting of as few or as many panels as you want!

As I said in a previous blog post, we’re just getting started with new Logos 7 features. There are many more to explore! We want to make sure you get thorough training and start using them as quickly as possible.

So please check out these training opportunities for Logos 7:

  • What’s New in Logos 7 Training Manual (38 chapters and 256 pages available in a full color print version and a Logos download)
  • ALL NEW Camp Logos 1 and 2 in Phoenix on September 13-15 (This will be the grand opening Camp Logos for Logos 7. New attendees and alumni alike will discover new features, instructions, and syllabi)

  1. Pastor Gary says:

    Logos 7???

From the screen shots it looks like you simply added some features to L6. Continually upgrading is expensive Logos. Hear your customers. We don’t make a ton of money, our organizations (for the most part) aren’t profit driven. I fear that a great product is being led by people who are getting out of touch with the realities of local church pastors.
Good luck with 7, I’ll have to stay in the back with the old version that I just upgraded to…

    • Pastor Tim Brose says:

      Amen, Brother!!

    • John Dahlinger says:

      Dear Pastor,
Logos serves a large range of brothers and sisters. The nature of technology is to constantly move forward. Logos is the premier software product available and only stays that way by tweeking and improving and adjusting. There are several other features that make the upgrade a step forward. It is not THAT expensive to JUST get the additional features. Most of us get new computers every 3-8 years just because the old tech doesn’t work with the new programs. Shoot…our smart phones barely work after 3 years. I don’t work for Logos and I am not a pastor. My advise is to expect and learn to embrace software and technologies every 2-4 years. That is the nature of the beast (beast with a little “b”; the Beast with a big “B” would be totally different.

    • THANK YOU Gary. I was so excited to be a student and get what used to be 50% off, but since being in ministry Logos has become SO expensive. Since I finally got the free update to Logos 6, some of the features I had in Logos 4 stopped working entirely (like my timeline feature). The church I pastor is TINY. For a software being marketed for people like me, the pricing has put it out of reach!

    • Rev. Dennis Wright says:

I agree Gary, upgrading every two years is far too expensive. Logos needs to take a page from WordSearch who allows a free upgrade to the base engine. If Logos keeps doing this I’ll be forced to choose another Bible Program such as WordSearch.

      • Tyler Smith says:

        Hi, Dennis.

In fact, we do offer our core engine totally free. You can get it here. Currently, you can get the Logos 6 Core Engine for free. We’ll offer the Logos 7 engine (for free) in February.

  2. Say you have done this, is there any way of resetting to the factory defaults of Logos Home Page Layouts?

    • yes :-) the defaults are stored in layouts. You can store any configuration you like – you can store as many configurations as you like. There is a setting that allows you to chose which of the layouts will open when you start up :-)

      • Thanks for the reply Dave – but I don’t that that was quite what I meant. If I customised the default layouts used by the homepage Go button. That’s great! But how do I return to the default ones. I’m not talking about what layout displays when I start which is the only setting I can see – that I will leave as opening to Home whether I am customising the layout run by the Go box or not.

  3. When is Logo 7 available

  4. Nolan Tobias says:

This looks great, but only for computers. I have an iPad-pro. Logos 7 is useless for me. Request: create a logos 7 for tablets.

  5. Paul L. White says:

    Mr. Proctor,

Does Logos 7 have an easy way to locate all of the references to Lucifer, regardless of what he is called, i.e. “devil,” “Satan,” or any other term? All in the same passage list?

    Thank you so much!

  6. Lawrence Hickerson says:

Does not work this way on my LOGOS 7 Titanium. The only screen of 5 (first-references) will show Matthew 28:19. Three of four will show Matthew 28:12. And the last window shows just Matthew which is the Greek Testament Commentary.

And the process took a good 5 minutes using a home wifi connection of 6Gb.

    Is this normal.

  7. Lawrence Hickerson says:

My Logos 7 was not sync’d. Duh. All working now.

  8. I’m a part-time pastor without preaching responsibilities but I enjoy study and teaching. I just upgraded to 7 through the Logos Now program. I find this to be an inexpensive way to upgrade. This is similar to what Microsoft does with Office 365 and Adobe with Photoshop. It’s a great way to get new features at a reasonable price.
Thank you for offering the NOW program.

  9. Logos Now would solve all the pastor’s upgrade options, it solved my this year. I am on a low fixed income and can not afford the upgrade to Logos 7. For less than $10 a month I don’t need to upgrade data sets or up grade the package. For me it’s a win/win situation with the smallest outlay of cash for the long term.

    • Tyler Smith says:

Awesome, Jay! That’s very encouraging. One of the reasons we have Logos Now is to offer an affordable option to folks like you. Very pleased to hear your pleased!

      Best,

      Tyler
