Search for the Commands of Jesus with Logos

find every command of jesus with LogosToday’s post is from Morris Proctor, certified and authorized trainer for Logos Bible Software. Morris, who has trained thousands of Logos users at his two-day Camp Logos seminars, provides many training materials.

We are told, in Matthew 28:20 that part of discipleship is obeying all of Jesus’ commandments. The logical question then is, What did Jesus command? And a follow up inquiry would be How can we locate the commands of Christ in Scripture?

Since the makers of Logos Bible Software have carefully tagged Scripture, we can combine a couple of those tags into one search allowing us to quickly find where Jesus issued a command. First, however, we need a bit of background about the search.

Throughout Scripture “conversation” takes place, which Logos calls Reported Speech. Within this Reported Speech the Speaker has been identified and tagged. We’re going to locate where Jesus has been tagged as the Speaker.

Also in this search, we’ll find Greek verbs in the imperative mood, which is the mood of command. At times, grammatical constructions may carry an imperative force even though they’re not in the imperative mood. This search will not indentify those instances.

So in summary, we’ll execute a search which locates the verses in the New Testament containing Jesus as the Speaker and verbs in the imperative mood.

  • Open a Bible containing the reverse interlinear option such as the ESVNASBLEB, or NKJV
  • Navigate to a passage in which Jesus has been tagged as the Speaker such as Matthew 28.18 (A)

1

  • Right click on any word in the verse (B)
  • Select from the right side of the context menu Jesus SPEAKER (C)
  • Select from the left side of the context menu Search this resource (D)

2(2)

  • Notice a Search panel opens with this text in the Find box: {Speaker } (E)

3

  • Change the search type to Morph (F)
  • Select New Testament as the verse range (G)
  • Select Logos Greek Morphology as the morphological database (H)

4

  • Place a space after the search query in the Find box (I)

5

  • Type the @ symbol in the Find box after the space and search query already present (J)
  • Select Verb from the Part of Speech drop down list (K)

6

  • Select Imperative from the Mood column on the morphological menu (L)
  • Press the Enter key to save this code in the Find box: @V??M (which stands for imperative verbs) (M)

7

  • Notice the Find box now contains this complete search query: {Speaker <Person Jesus>} @V??M (N)

8

  • Press the Enter key to generate the search results
  • Select Aligned as the view for the results (O)

9

This ALL or AND search, as it’s called, has just located the verses in the New Testament containing the person Jesus and an imperative verb!

With the results view set to Aligned you can easily see the imperative verbs. (P)

  1. Wow!

  2. Great tip. Question: why do my aligned results appear centered (text and imperatives) while Morris’s are left-aligned?

    • I want to know the same thing. My results are centered, but Morris’ are left just justified.

      • Jacob Cerone says:

I’ve been asking around and haven’t found anyone as of yet that knows why this is aligned to the left. It should be center aligned as it is in your software. I will keep asking and let you know if I find an answer.

  3. I followed the above steps but not able to see the Mood column on the morphological menu of the Find box. The columns I see in menu are – Stem Tam Person Gender Number State Ending Type etc. Kindly assist.

    • Jacob Cerone says:

      Deepak,

Sorry for the frustration. At the top of the search, make sure that your search parameters are correct. For this search, Morris has:

      All Morph Text
      All Passage
      ESV
      Logos Greek Morphology

The key here is Logos Greek Morphology. I believe you currently have your settings for Logos Hebrew Morphology.

Please let me know if changing this setting fixes it.

  4. I’m not able to access this feature in my Logos Bible Software library. I followed the directions, but I do not get the megaphone nor the “Speaker” option when I click with the right mouse button.

    Why?

  5. I Agree
    WOW!!!!

  6. Thanks for sharing! Awesome!

  7. Thanks

  8. Great to know that this is possible. However, this is so non-intuitive that nobody will remember it.

    • Jacob Cerone says:

The search syntax for Logos can be technical at times. But we’re constantly working to teach you how to make the most of the software.

Check out the Logos Pro page here: logos.com/logos-pro. You’ll find a number of videos that will teach you how to use the features of the software.

When you forget, simply come back and get a refresher! With a little practice, you’ll get the hang of it.

  9. Thank you, yet another thing I can't do in Logos Starter.

    • Jacob Cerone says:

      James,

The second part of this search (@V??M) should be available for the Starter collection. The syntax is a part of our referent dataset. A team of scholars at Logos have hand tagged the person, thing, and places in the biblical text, even when they are not explicitly present (i.e., pronouns or implied subject of the verb).

This data is available in Silver base packages and higher.

  10. No one has answered my question. Is anyone with knowledge reading this? See above.

    • Jacob Cerone says:

      Glenn,

Sorry your comment has not been addressed. May I ask what level base package you have? If you have a level below the Silver level, you will not have access to the Reported Speech or the Referent Data. This data has been hand curated by our in-house biblical scholars and is available at the Silver level.

  11. Why this opcion do not work when I have the software setup in Spanish?

    • Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your question- this feature should work for you if you own a spanish or english base package library.

in spanish- you will need at least Premier v5, Premier v6 (or higher)
in english- you will need at least Silver v5, Silver v6 (or higher)

      Hope this helps.

  12. Which program enables this feature? I have Bronze…

    • Jacob Cerone says:

      Nicole,

Thanks for your comment. This dataset is a part of the referent dataset and is currently available in the Silver base package.

  13. Dennis Snelson says:

I followed directions on this procedure very carefully, (several times), but came up with no results… can you help??
    Thanks Dennis

    • Jacob Cerone says:

      Dennis,

I’m sorry the instructions are not working for you. What base package do you have? The search is a part of the referent dataset in Silver base packages. If you have a base package below the Silver level, the software will return with no results.

  14. John Whitehouse says:

I tried the same thing with Paul (Acts 13:10) but it didn’t work as it did for Jesus. How come?
