Quickly Discover an Author’s View of a Passage

Morris Proctor Create and Search Author Collections
Today’s post is from Morris Proctor, certified and authorized trainer for Logos Bible Software. Morris, who has trained thousands of Logos users at his two-day Camp Logos seminars, provides many training materials.

If you’re like me, when you study a topic or passage you want to know what a specific author thinks about it. What are A.W. Tozer’s insights on worship? What does John Wesley or Charles Spurgeon say about John 3:16? It’s easy to zero in on a specific author’s views in Logos—simply create and search an author collection. You can create one with these simple steps:

    • Choose Tools | Collections
    • Name the collection the same name as your author, such as Charles Ryrie Books (A)
    • In the Rule box, type author:“First name Last name”. In this example, I typed author:“Charles Ryrie” (B)
    • Click New(C) to create an author collection:

Here’s a more detailed explanation of what you need to type in the rule box:

    • The word author,
    • followed by a colon with no spaces on either side of the colon,
    • and ending with the author’s first and last names included within double quotation marks.

To search your new author collection for a particular passage:

  • Click the Search icon
  • Select Basic as the search type (D)
  • Click the resources to search drop down list (E)
  • Select your desired author’s collection of resources (F)

  • Execute your word, phrase, reference, etc. search as normal (G)
  • Notice the search results are all from the specific author’s resources (H)

Now you can see everything a particular author said about the passage you’re studying.
