Happy Birthday, Jonathan Edwards

October 5, 2008 marked 305 years since the birth of Jonathan Edwards, who has been widely known as America’s greatest theologian. Most people’s birthdays don’t get remembered by very many people after they die, but Jonathan Edwards is a notable exception.

John Piper on Jonathan Edwards

As I mentioned in Friday’s post on Learning from Your Heroes’ Heroes, John Piper is well known for his immense appreciation for Edwards. He’s written or edited two books about Edwards, both of which are available in Libronix:

I’d strongly encourage you to listen to or read Piper’s biographical sketch on Edwards, “The Pastor as Theologian,” which was given at the first Desiring God Pastors Conference in 1988. Powerful and motivating.

As you might expect, Piper wrote a blog post about Jonathan Edwards’ Birthday, where he had this to say about him:

I suppose, after the Bible, no theologian has a greater ongoing effect on me as Jonathan Edwards. There are few in the world who combine the sharpness of mind, the scope of thought, the allegiance to Scripture, the depth of insight, the intensity of affections, the height of imagination, and the power of expression that he brings to all his work. I thank God for him today.

  1. Jonathan Edwards (October 5, 1703 – March 22, 1758) was a colonial American Congregational preacher, theologian, and missionary to Native Americans. Edwards “is widely acknowledged to be America’s most important and original philosophical theologian”[1]. He is known as one of the greatest and most profound of American theologians and revivalists. His work is very broad in scope, but he is often associated with his defense of Calvinist theology, the metaphysics of theological determinism, and the Puritan heritage. His famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” emphasized the just wrath of God against sin and contrasted it with the provision of God for salvation; the intensity of his preaching sometimes resulted in members of the audience fainting, swooning, and other more obtrusive reactions. The swooning and other behaviors in his audience caught him up in a controversy over “bodily effects” of the Holy Spirit’s presence.

  2. Rich DeRuiter says:

When will this be released? I just checked my pre-pub page and it still says “NA” for a ship-date, although above you say “soon.”
Also Religious Affections will be included in Works, right? So there’s no need to get just the one, when I’ll already have it “soon,” right?

  3. Phil Gons says:

    Hi, Rich,
They hoped to put the finishing touches on it by the end of the month, then it’s off to the replicators. If all goes well, you should be in possession of your copy in roughly a month.
Yes, the 2-vol. set does include Religious Affections.

  4. I have just been reading your blog entry on Jonathan Edwards, and wanted to download the free book by Edwards (Treatise on Religious Affections). I cannot get it to perform the “free” function. It tries to charge me $9.95, and whereas I am a pastor of a small church with very limited income, I need to get special “deals” like this if I can. What can I do? — Lester

  5. Freddy Lam says:

Hi, I did not even know the offer until I passed it by today, the 18th (I guess 4 days since you posted on the 7th, making a week October 14), is there any way you can continue the deal for a week more? I will purchase it immediately if such an arrangement can be made. Otherwise, can it be a Christmas special?
Regardless of your decision, God bless you and your ministry.

  6. Richard DeRuiter says:

Okay, it’s been over a month since you promised this would be done and there still isn’t a date up on the pre-pub page. Is there any word on the date for this?

  7. I don’t know the exact date, but I do know that it’s on the front burner in ETD right now.
