Pre-order the Stewardship Ministries Collection Today!

stewardship-ministries-collectionToday’s guest post is by Jay Link, chief steward of Stewardship Ministries and author of several books, available in the Stewardship Ministries Collection (now on Pre-Pub).

This powerful and unique collection of writings sets the record straight on both the meaning and the application of stewardship in our lives.  Tragically, the church has reduced the word stewardship to money and giving, stripping it of its real power and potential to radically transform believers’ lives.

The meaning of stewardship

Consequently, I have felt it necessary to add the word life to stewardship to correctly identify the full scope of what stewardship is really all about. The fundamental concept of Life Stewardship is based on the fact that God owns everything (Ps. 24:1) and we, consequently, are merely caretakers, managers, or stewards of his property—charged to manage every resource entrusted to us according to his wishes.

Eight of the fourteen volumes in the extensive Stewardship Ministries Collection contain 44 chapters/lessons that unpack Life Stewardship and all its ramifications and applications. We are stewards of the gospel, our bodies, the limited time we are entrusted with, our relationships, the material resources we manage, the earth, the talents we have been blessed with—the list goes on. There is not one “room in our house” that is not directly impacted by this foundational Life Stewardship truth.

We believers will universally acknowledge that God owns everything.  Yet, the great tragedy is that we still live like we are the owners and the ones making all the decisions. The disconnect between what we intellectually say we believe and how we actually live out our lives is often massive.

Giving in the New Testament

How we give is also radically changed when framed in a context of Life Stewardship. The traditional question is something like, “How much of my stuff am I going to give to God?”  The proper question should be, “How much of God’s stuff am I going to keep for myself, and how much am I going to make available for his purposes?” You can see that this latter question changes the discussion entirely. You will come to realize that no one can really be a “generous giver.” We, at most, will only be “obedient couriers,” delivering God’s resources where God wants them delivered. We are just his “mailmen”!

One volume in this collection is a powerful series of six sermons entitled the Better Way Giving Series. Each sermon identifies and unpacks one of the six dominant giving characteristics found in the New Testament. It addresses both the didactic teaching passages on giving and illustrative examples of how believers gave in the New Testament. Each sermon contains a three-point outline, substantial Scripture references, appropriate illustrations, and challenging applications. This series has radically changed how people think about and practice their giving.

Becoming a light on the hill

The collection also contains extensive content directed to people whom the Lord has blessed with material surplus. It provides them with very clear guidance on how to properly and effectively steward the surplus wealth they have been entrusted with.

This collection may be some of the most radical biblical teaching you will ever study. Its content is not for the believer who is content with where they are.  It is for the believer who knows there is more, much more, to their walk with the King of Kings than they are presently experiencing.  It is for those who are looking for, maybe even longing for, a path that will enable them to break through to new levels of transformational living, empowering them to become a “light on a hill” in the midst of the darkness—allowing the world to see Christ in the flesh, in your flesh.

My hope for you with the Stewardship Ministries Collection is that, after studying it, you will not simply know more about stewardship—you will also be personally challenged and motivated to start living differently. This Life Stewardship collection has the power to totally transform absolutely every area of your life, if you apply its simple yet powerful truths and principles. And once your life has been appropriately transformed, you will be in a position to compellingly invite others to join you!

10 Humbling Quotes on Thankfulness

Thankfulness QuotesThanksgiving is a time to get together with our closest friends and family, reflect on our blessings, and enjoy conversation over a delicious communal meal. It’s a time to thank God for every little thing he’s given us—and, hopefully, a time to remember how important it is to be thankful year-round.

Here are 10 quotes that remind us of the importance of giving thanks:

1. “If anyone would tell you the shortest, surest way to all happiness and all perfection, he must tell you to make a rule to yourself to thank and praise God for everything that happens to you.” —William Law, A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life

2. “The Christian’s life should be one of thankfulness to God.” —Charles Spurgeon, The Treasury of David, vol. 5

3. “We do not always know what is right. It is not always clear whether or not we should move. What we should say is not known in every situation. But there is one word which should never be far from our lips. It is ‘thanks’ (1 Thess. 5:18).” —Wayne Detzler, Living Words in Philippians

4. “Gratitude has a big job to do in us and our hearts. It is one of the chief ways that God infuses joy and resilience into the daily struggle of life.” —Nancy Leigh DeMoss, The Quiet Place

5. “It’s hard to give thanks for the consequences of evil. Gratitude in bad circumstances goes counter to our natural inclinations. But we are told to give thanks under every circumstance of life (Eph. 5:20).” —Al Detter, Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook

6. “The verbal utterances concerning Thanksgiving Day are mostly focused on visiting friends and loved ones, and of course, eating a bountiful turkey dinner. Yet without the biblical precedent of God’s people giving thanks, along with the example of the Pilgrims, we would not have this noteworthy holiday.” —Alvin J. Schmidt, How Christianity Changed the World

7. “Truly, we have much to thank God for, but if we would be thankful, we must set our hearts to do it with a will. We grumble and complain without thought, but we must think to give thanks.” —Samuel Logan Brengle, Take Time to be Holy

8. “Don’t complain when you’re in bad circumstances; cultivate a heart of thankfulness instead. If you’re not a thankful person, it’s because you think you deserve better circumstances than those you currently have. But if you got what you deserved, you’d be in hell. That goes for all of us. So be thankful for whatever God gives you. That will take all the sourness out of your life.” —John MacArthur, The Master’s Plan for the Church

9. “Thanklessness is a terrible disregard of God’s goodness.” —Lynn Garder, What the Bible Says about Suffering

10. “As we walk by the seashore, gaze in wonder at the stars, or smell the fragrance of a flower, we are to sense God speaking to us through His creation. And, seeing Him, we are to worship and give thanks.” —Larry Richards, The 365-Day Devotional Commentary

Spend today thanking God, but don’t let it stop there. Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday; it’s an ongoing state of praise and thankfulness for the many blessings in our lives.

Shining a Light on God’s Glory

the-glory-of-god-a-biblical-theologyToday’s guest post is from Philippe Paul-Luc Viguier, author of The Glory of God: A Biblical Theology and college pastor at Lake Hills Community Church in Castaic, California.

Can God’s glory be understood?

God’s glory is without doubt one of the most important concepts in the Bible. From creation to new creation, it saturates the pages of both testaments. Glory language is also commonly used in Jewish and Christian theological and devotional discussions.

The Glory of God: A Biblical Theology shows that God’s glory is not a distant, confusing, and esoteric reality; it is approachable, knowable, and applicable, especially through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Studying God’s glory

This book provides a biblical theology of glory, beginning with a study of key biblical terms. It first looks at the main synonyms of “glory” in Hebrew; then it goes on to examine kabod, the main term used for God’s glory in the Old Testament, and doxa, the principal term used in the New Testament. Following the study of biblical terms, it turns to the extrabiblical definition of Shekinah, which proves to be an unfitting synonym for kabod.

The book then addresses two of Scripture’s most comprehensive passages in relation to glory: Exodus 33:12–34:35 and John 1:1–18. These chapters draw on eight aspects of glory: God’s kingly glory, God’s beaming glory, God’s essential glory, God’s revelatory glory, God’s praiseworthy glory, God’s messianic glory, God’s participatory glory, and God’s eschatological glory.

This book is ideal for anyone who wants to know more about what glory means in the Bible—and what it means for believers today. Pre-order it now and get the special Pre-Pub price!

Why NAMB Is Equipping Church Planters with Logos and Proclaim

namb-send-network-logos-350x200Church planters need a library that’s deep enough for preparing sermons, yet compact enough to bring with them wherever they go.

While their church is new and growing, many planters are holding service in temporary spaces, so they just don’t have the shelf space for hundreds of books. They’re also facing a wide variety of commitments on a tight schedule. They need more than just a library—they need a research assistant.

“Church planters are some of the most amazing people I know. With full schedules and modest finances, dedicating resources and shelf-space to a library of books and commentaries is hard for many to do.” —Aaron Linne, Logos’ director of church products

That’s why the North American Mission Board (NAMB) is giving each of its church planters a Logos 5 Silver base package and a six-month license to Proclaim. They’re giving all these pastors the best tools and resources to disciple their churches.

“This will be a great step in helping our church planters go deeper as they explore Scripture for their own spiritual growth and as they lead members of their congregations to grow deeper in their faith.” —Micah Millican, NAMB’s director of church planter relations
