A new version of Logos Bible Software for Mac is now available for download. Version 1.2.2 fixes a couple of bugs: a font display issue that occurred in some reports with Snow Leopard and a search problem with queries ending with search operators. Everyone running Safari 4 (whether you’re using Snow Leopard or not) should update to 1.2.2.

As with earlier updates, version 1.2.2 is free to existing users and can be downloaded from your Logos.com account. Go to Logos.com, sign in, navigate to My Account > Order History, and then click on the order number for your Mac engine or base package order.

At the bottom of the order page, you’ll see a “Files to Download” section.

Click the “Download” link next to LogosMac1.2.2.dmg to save it to your Mac, and then double-click the file to install the update. Follow the instructions, and you should be up and running with the latest version in just a minute or two.

Today many Mac users around the globe are upgrading to Apple’s latest and greatest operating system, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Our developers have been testing Logos for Mac 1.2 on pre-release builds of Snow Leopard and have found an issue that causes a handful of resources to crash the application.

There’s a known font issue that causes some display problems in certain reports. We’re working on version 1.2.2 to correct this bug.

Also, I am getting a lot of questions about whether Mac users should attend Camp Logos. We have prepared a special page to answer that question.

If you're a Mac user, though, here are a couple of tips that hopefully will come in handy:

• When you're working in a resource window (Bible, commentary, dictionary, etc.) press the keystroke shortcut Tab (for Mac 1.2) to select the current location box. Now just type your new reference. This just saves you from having to click the mouse in the box every time you want to jump to a new location.
• While you're working in your Bible software choose Libronix DLS | Preferences | Appearance to customize your system.

Last night we put the finishing touches on Logos for Mac 1.2 and made it live for all Logos for Mac users. As with earlier updates, version 1.2 is a free update that you can download from your Logos.com account. It’s also now available for purchase as a download (the 1.2 DVD will be another week or two).

In addition to fixing a number of bugs, 1.2 adds some cool new features like Bible Speed Search, Parallel Resource Associations, printing, the ability to choose an English font, and more. Read the new support article to see the complete list of changes.

On Monday Apple launched Safari 4, the latest version of their web browser. There are a couple of incompatibilities with Logos Bible Software for Mac 1.1 (specifically with the Exegetical Guide), so we’ve released version 1.1.1 to address these issues.

Version 1.1.1 is identical to version 1.1 with the exception of which version of Safari is required. If you don’t plan to move to Safari 4 yet, then you should stick with 1.1 for now.

If you’re an existing Logos for Mac user, you can download this new version for free by going to Logos.com, signing in, navigating to My Account > Order History, and then clicking on your Mac engine or base package order. At the bottom of the order page, you’ll see a “Files to Download” section.

Click the “Download” link next to the appropriate file to save it to your Mac, make sure Logos for Mac is closed, and then double-click the file to install the update. Follow the instructions, and you should be up and running with the latest version in less than a minute.

Update: If you’re running Mac OS X 10.4, you will not be able to install version 1.1.1 yet. We’re working on a fix. In the meantime, you’ll need to stick with Safari 3 and Logos for Mac 1.1. We’ll let you know as soon as this issue has been resolved.

Update 2: Version 1.1.1 now works properly on Mac OS X 10.4 as well.

The latest Geeks & God podcast, episode 116, is now available, and it’s all about Logos Bible Software. It runs a little over an hour and features the following:

I listened to it yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s very well done. You can listen to it on the Geeks & God site or download it in MP3 or MP4 format and listen to it on your commute to work or while you’re working out or mowing the lawn.

Logos Bible Software for Mac is now shipping!

As I was riding the bus to work last week, I was reading 1 Peter 1:3-5 on my Beta copy of Logos for Mac (part Bible study, part Beta testing). I sat there thinking about all the great promises of God within this text and thought, "I wonder what Dr. K. has to say about this." So, I hit apple+L (that's control+L for you windows users) and opened my library. At that moment I had an epiphany. Now, if you've been a Logos users for a while, you've probably already had this epiphany. For some of you, this epiphany is the reason you bought the software in the first place. For me, it was a new thought... I have a library on my computer.

Now, sure, everyone who has a Logos base package knows that he or she has a library on his or her computer, but this day was different. As I opened Kistamaker's commentary, I thought about how big the print edition of this book would be. I own a couple hard copies from Baker's New Testament Commentary Series and these are big, heavy, hardcover books. I chuckled as I thought about how funny it would look if I were on the bus trying to read my Bible and this commentary. It just wouldn't work out too well.

Then I opened my Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary to see what it had to say about hope and remembered from my seminary days how incredibly large this book would be if I had it in my lap right now. I clicked more and more resources. As I opened the ESV English-Greek Reverse Interlinear of the NT and my Analytical Lexicon of the Greek New Testament to study the original language in a little more detail, it just got funnier. By this point I probably had 5 or 6 books open, in my lap, on a crowded and bouncy bus. This kind of study would simply be impossible with the print equivalent.

The bus rounded the corner and I saw my stop approaching. I quickly closed my computer and tossed it in my bag. As I stepped off the bus and started walking towards Logos, I thought back to my campus ministry days. OH, how I wish I had Logos back then! I constantly battled between having my library at the church office or my home office. I was continually toting books back and forth. Then there were my trips to study on campus. Between these three places it was inevitable that I would want or need one of the books that weren't where I was at the moment. How easily this could have all been solved if I only had Logos back then.

After posting a couple videos on the blog, I realized that I hadn't actually introduced myself (and neither had Phil . . . thanks Phil). So, by way of introduction, I'm Ryan Burns, and I'm the new guy in the office. I joined Logos about 2 months ago and have been loving it up here. I say, "up here" because prior to taking this job at Logos I was attending a Seminary 3,200 miles from Bellingham, in the sunny city of Orlando, FL. Now, while I do occasionally miss the sun, I'm more than happy to trade the sun for the cool temperature and amazing beauty of the Pacific Northwest. That, and Logos has a sweet coffee maker, and I love coffee.

In all seriousness though, I'm really thrilled to be a part of the Logos family. I've been a user of Logos for a little over a year, and every day I get more and more excited about our product. Most specifically though, I'm excited about Logos for Mac. As a mac user myself, I've had to join many of you in booting up windows on my mac in order to run Logos. Thankfully, mac users, our day is coming . . . soon. With beta testing wrapped up, the second release candidate being run through the ringer, and pre-orders coming in daily, the finish line is in sight. It is almost here.

While it might sound silly, I think the thing I'm most excited about is being able to quickly launch Logos. I mean, no more starting Parallels and waiting. Starting windows and waiting. Logging in and waiting. Then, finally, getting to start Logos. In all, it usually took me 4 or 5 minutes to go through that whole fiasco just to run my beloved Logos. Top that off with the fact that I never really figured out how to run parallels efficiently and probably have far too few system resources allocated to it, thus Logos (and all my other Windows programs) always run slow. That friends, however, is all about to change. Soon, we'll all simply look down in our dock (unless you put your dock on the side) and with one simple click of the mouse, we'll be running Logos. That is just beautiful.

So, mac users, be excited. Our day is coming. If you haven't pre-ordered, there is still time. And, I'd also remind you about our special deal for those of you who are already Logos users and are crossgrading.

These are exciting times at Logos. I'm happy to be here and be part of the family. And every day I come into work I sit down at my desk, pull my Macbook out of my bag, place it on the corner of my desk, and launch the latest build of Logos for Mac. Mac users can download the new and improved Bible Widget from www.LogosBibleWidget.com or Apple.com.

The biggest update is that the new widget adds the ESV Bible so you can instantly navigate to a verse in either the English Standard Version or King James Version Bible.

Logos Bible Widget version 2 is also much more streamlined, in response to requests from users who found the original widget to be a desktop space hog. It's also very good-looking, if I may say so (kudos to Sean Fields, Logos design director)... 

Using the widget is simple: Type a Bible reference to jump to that verse. Click the forward or back arrow to jump to the next/previous verse; click the double arrows to jump to verse 1 of the next/previous chapter. You can copy/paste text from the verse window into another application.

To switch Bible versions, just flip the widget over.

Good news! Logos Bible Software for the Mac continues to progress. This week we saw searches running and the first reports completed.

The full search syntax and the Passage Guide are underway, and we're expecting to see features come online at a faster pace, now that so much of the underlying infrastructure is in place.

We sent out the following letter this week to all the people subscribed to the Logos for the Mac email list.

Dear Mac User,

I wish I had more news! It certainly seems like I have more Mac enthusiasts clamoring for it every day. (Those commercials must be working!)

While progress is being made on Logos for the Mac every week, the reports on progress make for pretty dull reading. (There's an example below.) I can say that we've received another internal drop, and some very important features like licensing, license synchronization with the server (to let you move backup licenses or restore them from a Windows installation), and "data type highlighting" are up and running.

The features we all want to see and play with, though, are still under development: searching, reports, etc.

And there is no good answer to the question I'm asked almost daily: When?

The best we can say is: When it's done.

In the past few months almost all of the progress has been inside the application; the only new screenshots we could provide would be of some pretty dull dialogs for license management. Once the work on searching, reports, etc. "breaks through" to the UI surface we should be able to provide more interesting (and encouraging) updates.

We just launched a free Dashboard widget (for Mac users only--sorry, PC folks!) that can be downloaded from www.logosbiblewidget.com or from Apple.com.

What's a widget? It's a handy little application that sits in the Mac OS X Dashboard and does something useful. Usually, just one thing or a couple of things. In the case of the Logos Bible Widget, you can...

Look up any Bible verse instantly! Simply type or cut and paste any scripture reference into the Logos Bible Widget and instantly see the entire verse. Easier than grabbing your Bible off the shelf, faster than going to Bible Gateway, and best of all, it’s free!

But wait, there's more...! Another reason to install the widget (on a Mac only, remember?) is that we'll use it to announce Logos for the Mac when it ships. So not only can you subscribe to the Logos for the Mac email...you can also keep tabs by installing the widget.

The ETS and SBL meetings wrapped up yesterday and the Logos team is heading home (perhaps some will make it back in time for our big Thanksgiving lunch at noon today). It sounds like the meetings were very fruitful, with a great deal of buzz around our current and future products.

Yesterday we announced a new release date for Logos Bible Software for the Mac: Spring 2006. We're confident that the product will be shipping by the time June 21 rolls around, and we know it will be worth the wait.

Work is progressing steadily with no major obstacles, and the application looks great in the current build. Our artist-in-residence (who is a Mac devotee himself) turned out some very nice visuals for the interface so that Logos Bible Software would feel right at home on the Mac.

We get a lot of questions about how to participate in beta testing the Mac product. We'll announce all public beta testing from the Logos for the Mac email list so sign up and stay tuned...
