Cycling through Similar Books with the Arrow Keys

I thought that when you were studying a word in BDAG (for instance) and you hit the right arrow your next lexicon would open up to that word, if the lexicon contained it. When I hit the right arrow from BDAG I get another lexicon (TDNT) but it opens up to some random page. Am I doing something wrong or is this not possible? Thanks for any suggestions Sounds like the active index in BDAG is page number, not topic so when you right arrow LDLS goes to the same page in the next resource. The active index icon is near the current reference box on the resource toolbar and looks like a page. -- Clif

What a simple yet very helpful tip! I never knew that this feature existed. Brilliant!

Glad you found it helpful, Scott. Hope you're able to put it to good use!

What font and screen resolution is that screenshot? Looks like Vista, so ClearType is probably enabled too, right?

Ben, here are the details:

  • Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 125% Zoom at 1920x1200 on a 28" Hanns-G
  • Minion Pro (from Adobe) with ClearType enabled

Hope it helps.

@Phil. What's great about this keyboard shortcut is that it ignores resources that don't have an entry for that particular keyword. What would be even better is that the same would be true from the drop-down parallel resources menu. It's frustrating to jump to another resource from that menu, only to find that the index doesn't exist, and you're back at the beginning of the resource. Even more annoying when that window is linked to other windows, and the whole workspace gets thrown into confusion. Just greying out resources without that index on the drop-down menu would solve the problem.

Mark, that's a great point—and an excellent suggestion. I'll pass it along to the appropriate people. Thanks for sharing!

Mark, I passed this on to the mastermind behind the next version and found out that this was already high on his wish list of features he hopes we can implement. No promises, but it sounds pretty positive.

This is a great way to flip through dictionary entries on a given topic. Each dictionary/resource has its own strengths weaknesses biases.
However, I have noticed that some dictionaries cycle in their own particular galaxy of parallel associations which will not cycle or interact with with other dictionaries which have their own galaxy of parallel associations. An example of this is the the Anchor Bible Dictionary which will never cycle (on my system) to the ISBE (even when they have the entries with exactly the same topic heading). Likewise, the IVP dictionaries will not cycle to the ABD.
For instance, a parallel resource cycle on the topic "Eschatology" in the IVP title "Dictionary of Paul and His Letters" produces this list of resources:
LIST A (parallel associations for Eschatology)
1. The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters
2. The Dictionary of the Later New Testament and Its Developments
3. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary
4. Nelson's New Christian Dictionary
5. Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary
6. The New Bible Dictionary, Third Edition
7. New Dictionary of Biblical Theology
8. New Dictionary of Theology
9. The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church
10. Pocket Dictionary of Apologetics and Philosophy of Religion
11. Pocket Dictionary of Biblical Studies
12. The Concise Dictionary of Christian Theology
13. Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels
14. Dictionary of New Testament Background

I have to manually open ABD and to produce this series of resource associations for the same topic:
1. The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary
2. Christian Theology: An Introduction to Its Traditions and Tasks
3. A Dictionary of Biblical Tradition in English Literature
4. The Earlier Epistles of St. Paul
5. Every Prayer in the Bible
6. Hard Sayings of the Bible
7. Hayford's Bible Handbook
8. Index to the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament
9. Introducing the Apocrypha: Message, Context, and significance
10. The NASB Topical Index
11. Nelson's Topical Bible Index
12. Systematic Theology (Pannenberg)
13. Systematic Theology (Charles Hodge)
14. Topical Analysis of the Bible

Interesting how it's exactly 14 resources in each list! This by the way is on a Libronix setup with no custom resource associations.
