The contest asks me to identify the greatest life lesson I have learned.
That is easy and immediate. Jesus is The Son of God and loved us enough to die on a cross for us that believers in Him might be finally and eternally reconciled with God the Father who deserves our loving, faithful obedience.

    • Chris Stump September 5, 2013 at 9:06 pm #

I have learned not to attempt to mold God’s plans for my life into what I think God’s plans are for my life. Too often I have used my own desires, however noble they may be, as a substitute for where God is really leading me. It has been a tough lesson to learn, but sometimes God’s desire for my life does not align with my own.

God will always pick me up when I fall. It doesn’t matter how bad I mess up. He will always love me.

The greatest lesson I have learned and am still fighting to learn (present continual tense :) is to F.O.C.U.S. = Finding Only Christ Ultimately Satisfies.

God isn’t just sovereign, though he is, but he is good. One without the other isn’t enough.

      • Shelley September 24, 2013 at 8:15 pm #

        Brian,
I think that you have said it perfectly. For me, anyhow…. Right now I am in a desert place where in I must keep my focus solely on the Lord or I would be too frightened by the circumstances that are far beyond my control. I know that God is sovereign but without being able to trust that He is also good, I would be without hope. I need to know that He cares that I am suffering terribly and that, in His perfect timing, will lift me from the pit. Others are watching to see what He will do for me so this is also a great moment of growth in the walk of many who surround my life. Thank you for putting into words feelings I had not yet sorted.
        Shelley.

To my mind the spirit of the Gospel is not what you can do good for others but why you do it. Motive in your heart can be more important that the good work you do. And of course your motivation has to be driven by love. Otherwise your justice will not be better than the justice of pharisees.

The greatest life lesson is this: The closer you draw to God and the closer you draw other men to God the more the enemy will use everything including your own against you and His mighty works of Grace. Prepare yourself and your family for the onslaught, rest in His hand, Trust in His love, share Him with passion and love and the rest will work itself out to His glory.

The greatest lesson I have learned is that whether or not I am ever blessed in any way at all in this life, be it winning a contest or receiving the provisions for my daily needs, YHWH is God and I am not, and as Creator He deserves my honor, service, and worship simply because He is.

I’ve learned to trust what Jesus says in Matt 6:25-34. As a Pastor, I’m often prone to worry about the things the Jesus has already promised to take care of. So I have been taught through the Holy Spirit to just keep seeking his kingdom and righteousness and let him carry the weight of everything else.

  48. Joel Forman September 3, 2013 at 6:27 pm #

The greatest lesson I have learned in my life so far, besides there is a God and He loves all of us, would have to be this. Control is a lie that we pursue from the day we are born, and as a Christian we must continually give up to God each day. There is one thing we control, our responses to the people and the situations around us. Yet, I have chosen to give even this little bit of control to God. I have yet to fully succeed, but I grow closer to God each day because of it.

Question:”What is the great life lesson you have learned?”
That God asks us to step up and take risks to follow Him. That we need to trust that if He calls us to do something, even if we feel unprepared or unqualified, that His will is true & that He will help us through it.

Greatest life lesson I’ve learned probably would have to be enjoying every day God gives me, even if it involves strife, hardship, lack, pain, injustice, or frustrations. Life has taught me that you can’t always choose what happens to you day-to-day; good or bad, but to embrace them all the same in full knowledge that God’s hand is on your life and He will never allow you to be tested or tried beyond what you can handle (1 Cor. 10:13). We aren’t immune or filtered through life’s trials, but we are kept by a loving Father who upholds, protects, and sees us through to the green pasture.

It takes a long time to become a good hitter in baseball. Unlike many sports, very few baseball players go directly from college into the majors. If you get a hit three times out of ten plate appearances, you’re a very good hitter. If you can manage four out of ten, you’re an extraordinary hitter. That means a good hitter fails sixty to seventy percent of the time. It takes a long time to learn how to hit a curveball. It’s humbling to be a baseball player, and I think that’s why there isn’t a lot of chest thumping in this sport.
One of the greatest life lessons I’ve learned is that Christian discipleship is much like learning how to hit. It takes a long, humbling time to follow Christ well, and every Christian must travel their own winding way. It’s wise for us to adopt a baseball manager’s long-term perspective in this process of discipleship. We should be patient and gracious with those who haven’t, from our perspective, “gotten it” yet. The truth of the matter is, there are probably a multitude of things you haven’t gotten, either. But you only know this when you’ve walked with Jesus for a while—long enough to know that, just when you thought you knew how to follow Him, you’re thrown a curveball that you just can’t hit.

Being a Christian in a non-Christian world is the most challenging citizenship I have ever find in the face of the earth. Not only swimming upstream against the cultures, but also practicing values that against the odds of the worlds. The keys lie within transformation given by God himself and humility to admit that we are weak.

…Man is not the centre. God does not exist for the sake of man. Man does not exist for his own sake. “Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”…~ C.S. Lewis

The greatest lesson I have ever learned is one that Jesus is still teaching me: to rely completely on him and trust that he knows what he is doing. Even when I’m uneasy or nervous about what I feel like he is leading me to, he is still totally in control. It all goes back to Jesus being Lord. It means more than him saving us from hell, it means we submit to him as the head of our lives. Following Jesus is not always easy, but we are always under his Lordship and watchcare.

Greatest life lesson: But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” I’m a youth group director at my church. I love my teens, and needless to say, when someone else gets involved I can get a bit jealous. Especially when kids from my group prefer to confide or seek advice from other leaders instead of me. I mean I’m supposed to be your spiritual guide right, your “go to” guy for all things Jesus-like! However God has better plans, and while fasting one night He showed me that this was His youth group and not mine; that these are His teen and if He wants someone better prepared and in tune with what the teens were going through to minister them then that’s how it was to be. I just needed to do what God wanted me to do and to leave the rest in His capable hands!

My greatest life lesson… gratitude. Not to work for salvation, but being humile, receiving the free gift of God. That’s making me happy, every day again. That’s giving me the right spiritual behaviour of gratitude. The road is cleared now to let God do all the good things He wants to do to me. My oversized ‘me’ is out of the way. So it is possible by now to be grateful, even if everyday life is not loughing with prosperity to me.

Greatest life lesson: GOD IS ALWAYS FAITHFUL!

    Why such a simple answer?
That truth changes the way I come to God in prayer, study, and worship.

God told me thru the Bible that he will always answer my prayers, so I can pray with CONFIDENCE, and TRUST that his answer is the best one no matter what it is.

God told me thru his living Scripture that the Holy Spirit has been sent to reveal the whole truth, and He did in the Bible, so I can be COURAGEOUS in teaching, knowing I have the COMPLETE TRUTH.

God told me in the God-breathed Pages of the Bible, how the first Christians worshiped and glorified His name! Christians who remembered Christ, who were led by Jesus’ Apostles, when the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus’ truth to the Apostles and Disciples, their example of worship is the ONLY EXAMPLE God intended for me to follow, so I can come to WORSHIP with MY WHOLE HEART AND SOUL devoted!

Although I didn’t see in the instructions to enter what I’m supposed to post, I’ll go along with everyone else. My greatest life lesson is that I am a wretched man, bent toward sin, who can do nothing righteous except through the power of the Holy Spirit in me and the righteousness that was imputed to me when Jesus died on the cross for my sins. As Jesus told the young leader, there is no one who is good except God.

  192. Samuel September 17, 2013 at 9:51 am #

    Hi all,

My greatest life lesson? Maybe some things I learned in difficult times:
Even the best of people can fail me, I know I can fail myself many times, but God’s Word never failed me!
I learned to not put my trust in men anymore, not even in myself, but on the Lord Jesus and His Word only.

While reading many Bible passages and applying the lessons and truths therein retrospectively to my past circumstances, I often concluded the following:
Had I read and taken the Bible more seriously and more carefully sooner, then I would have made much different choices and probably wouldn’t have had so big troubles. But: Thank God for all the troubles that He used to bring me back to Him and to His Word alone!

Many people (I did) tended to either follow our big leaders or try/desire to be some kind of leader, often even both…
But: had I realized earlier that the Lord Jesus is the only mediator between God and men (not only in Gods Word, 1 Tim2:5, but in real practice in my life), I would have put my trust earlier in Him alone, instead of admiring, studying and following my big examples or leaders.

The Lord Jesus permitted and used many troubles and difficult situations in my life to finally get my attention to Him and to His Word alone.
Hope and pray that you too will be richly blessed by our Lord Jesus!

Ok, maybe this all sounds quite evident for many of you. I was told these things quite often by good brothers, but still it took me a long lesson to start to grasp a little more the full implications of it. I’m still learning.

    Love and greetings,
    Samuel

We sponsor a men’s Revival every September open to churches in and around our area and we are letting the Holy Spirit lead us to do all we can for men to grow in their walk with Jesus Christ as husbands, fathers, single parents and boys growing up to be a real man for Christ. In short the leaders God wants us to be for the health of families and deciles for Christ. In The last three years since it’s inception, we have been blessed as men have grown towards being men God wants them to be! However now my wife is pregnant and healthy with a healthy growing baby. For me a great lesson was to trust God and he has proven faithful. Because when we were trying we just bought a house and were remodeling. I was finishing up school. I just got a new job. Now the house is done, got my degree, and have settled nicely in my job. After decades of living, and scores of failures, I’ve finally come to the realization that – in everything – the most certain route to success and actual joy is to Do the Word. Surprise, surprise! Hearing it alone doesn’t cut it. Wanting to do it is only preparation. Pretending to do it is a shameful failure. Judging the Word is a pretentious and dangerous game… let the Word judge you! Talking about it doesn’t count unless you actually do it. Do the Word. In marriage, relationships, work, choices… you name it… the key to joy and success and life is to Do the Word.

So many lessons but probably one of the most important: “Only that which proceed from the Father, and is done by the Spirit of God for the glory of God, will last for eternity.” Too many things we do FOR God, our ideas, our plans, our service, but the only things that last will be those which are initiated by, directed by, empowered by, and for the glory of God. “The Son can do nothing of Himself but what He sees the Father do…” “Without Me you can do nothing…”

My most meaningful spiritual life lesson is one that applies universally, not just spiritually. It is simply this: If I am to take Christ seriously, I must become authentic in my relationship with Him. If I withhold from God my emotions, whether anger or joy, I am not able to relate to Him honestly and transparently. God is bigger than my anger or my confusion. He is greater than my frustration and disappointment. He can take it, even when I fear that He will not. Only by honestly facing my deep emotions and discussing them candidly, and sometimes graphically, with God, can I hear Him and understand who He is and grow in knowledge of and intimacy with Him. To do anything else is a lie and I cannot love those to whom I cannot he completely honest.

Greatest Life Lesson? I cannot successfully navigate this life, or especially the next one, on my own. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. He died because of MY sins, and rose again because He is God. He will come again. Some believe this, most do not. All will one day stand before Him.

God loves me!! He REALLY loves me!! He walked me through 12 years of “sifting” and repeatedly reminded me I wasn’t going through it alone, He was right beside me. When the sifting was over, He called me into Post-Abortion Ministry and the Bible Study He introduced to me for this ministry was the same thing He took me through in those 12 years!! (I’m not post-abortive!!) Because of His great love for me and the patience He afforded me through those extremely hard years, I understand how much He cares for these women!! The greatest life lesson I have learnt is that God’s will is always best. Some years ago I went through a bad time in my life and became disillusioned with church. I walked away from church life even though I knew it was going against what God wanted me to do. During that period I was conscious of being outside of God’s will and I also felt unsafe, as if living without protection in a dangerous place. I was very miserable throughout this time. Like the Prodigal Son, I later came back to my senses and repented, seeking to get back on track with my relationship with God and His purposes in my life. I experienced God’s wonderful grace as he fully revived and restored me. In response, I immediately got integrated back into church life and set about pursuing my destiny in God, and since then I have never looked back. I have devoted my time and energy in the study of God’s word, in prayer and deepening my relationship with Jesus. In doing so I have developed greater sensitivity to His direction in my life both in the long term and in daily life, learning to hear His inner voice more acutely in order to know his perfect guidance in making the right decisions in life. I have no desire to do anything outside of God’s will but wish to stick close to Him and not go off on a tangent doing my own thing. I have learnt it is the safest, most fulfilling, most joyful place to be, and more importantly, it is a walk of faith that pleases God. To paraphrase what Peter said to Jesus in John 6:68, ‘You are the source of eternal life, where else should we go?’
