“There is no magic in small plans. When I consider my ministry, I think of the world. Anything less than that would not be worthy of Christ nor of His will for my life.” —Henrietta Mears

henrietta mearsHenrietta Mears was one of the twentieth century’s great Bible teachers. For 35 years, she served as the director of Christian education at First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, California. Her experience as a former drama instructor, gifts as a teacher, and penchant for memorizing large passages of Scripture brought the Bible to life. Through her leadership, First Presbyterian’s Sunday school attendance grew from 450 in 1928 to 6,500 in 1933.

Dissatisfaction with  available Sunday school curricula led Mears to found Gospel Light Publications in 1933 as a way to distribute her own curriculum. Gospel Light continues as one of the largest providers of Sunday school curricula today.

It would be impossible to assess Mears’ full influence. Not only has she touched the lives of those under her direct care; she has had a remarkable second-hand influence through those she mentored. When you consider the mentoring she did with Bill and Vonette Bright (who founded Campus Crusades for Christ and grew that ministry into more than 27,000 staff members and 225,000 volunteers in 190 countries) and Billy Graham (who wrote of Mears, “I doubt if any other woman outside my wife and mother has had such a marked influence on my life. She is certainly one of the greatest Christians I have ever known”), you begin to see the legacy of this remarkable woman.
