Logos 5: Find All References to a Biblical Person with Clause Search

Today’s post is from Morris Proctor, certified and authorized trainer for Logos Bible Software. Morris, who has trained thousands of Logos users at his two-day Camp Logos seminars, provides many training materials.

My favorite new feature in Logos 5 is probably the tagging of referents in the reverse interlinear. Here’s what I mean. Suppose you want to conduct a thorough biographical study of Timothy, so you search the Bible for every occurrence of the word Timothy. This, of course, finds the word Timothy, but what if he’s referred to as brother, disciple, or son? A simple word search doesn’t find these references—until now in Logos 5.

A Logos research team has manually tagged the BIble’s pronouns and linguistic expressions, pointing them to the correct people, places, and things. Three cheers for this team! This means you can now find all references to the man Timothy, regardless of the words used.

Here are a couple of ways to see this incredible tagging in action:

Biblical People

  • Choose Tools | Bible Facts (Biblical People, Places, and Things have been combined into one tool).
  • Type Timothy in the reference box. (A)
  • Select Timothy from the dropdown list to generate the report.
  • Notice, in the left sidebar (which replaces the top ribbon in Logos 4), the section called Referred to As. (B)

Referred to As displays all the references to the man Timothy, not the word Timothy.

Clause Search

  • Click the Search icon.
  • Select Clause (A) as the search type.
  • Select All Passages (B) and the Lexham Greek-English Interlinear (C) from the dropdown lists.
  • Select Person Anywhere in Clause (D) from the examples list to place that search string in the Find box.
  • Change, in the Find box, the word Moses to Timothy (E).
  • Press the Enter key to generate the search.

Again, here are all the verses that mention the man Timothy, not the word Timothy!

Ok, this doesn’t seem to work for me. I don’t see “referred to as” but “SEE ALSO”. Doesn’t seem to present as you are showing it here under Logos 5? I tried it with both Mary and Joseph, to now avail!

What version of 5 do you have? As noted by John (below) the “referent” feature is only available on Silver and up.

I also agree with John that Morris should (now) begin his tips by stating precisely “which” versions of Logos 5 his tip is applicable to (since all versions below Gold have different Data Sets).

Verbum Masters (Logos 5), so not sure where it stands in relation to the straight Logos set…

Hi there. looks great. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the search icon – so I could complete the first half, but not the second half where the clause option appears. Best regards, Mike

Sorry. I had a blond moment. The second of your tutorial is not a continuation of the first half, but a fresh tutorial – a fresh search. Best regards,

      Mike

Why wasn’t this made as an update to Logos 4?

  4. John Underwood November 14, 2012 at 5:12 am #

    @ Linda
No doubt it took considerable man hours to do the tagging. Version upgrades like 4 to 5 and the revenue help them off set those hours. Primarily it seems Logos sells content no code (version upgrades) but they can’t update the code at great expense and not some means recovering the cost. It could have been handled as a paid upgrade to 4 but managing the upgrade model that way would be very hard and confusing.

    @Logos
The articles really should point out when features are version specific. It is pretty disapointing to get jazzed about a really useful tool read the whole article, investing the time only to find out it is not available to well the rest of the “great unwashed” who can’t afford silver or above.

      @ John,

On my computer screen the first words in the title are “Logos 5:”

      • John Underwood November 14, 2012 at 2:55 pm #

Indeed but at present this particular feature is only available in the silver package and above. The lead off should be “Logos 5 Silver and above” So in my case as a leaders library owner 4.0 I would be forced to pay north of $500 for the silver package to get what essentially is functionality update and take the associated content update. I don’t mind paying for functionality but don’t want to be forced into buying a library i can’t use or afford to get that functionality.

Thankfully the OUTSTANDING folks at Logos have done our faith in them justice and are working on a fix now that will allow a version upgrade of the functionality without the more costly content. You can read about it here. http://community.logos.com/forums/t/58259.aspx

        I am a FAN

Hey guys… the minimal crossgrade is now available… I added it to my Silver package and now have the capability that Morris refers to above. Woohoo!
