Several questions have come up, so I thought I’d address them here. Feel free to ask any other questions you have in the comments.

  1. Is there a way I can see what I already own?
    Yes. All 2,010 titles in the master collection are also available for sale in our new Christmas Specials list. You can either filter out the titles you already own to see what’s left, or filter out the titles you don’t own to see what you have. This should help you evaluate how much of the content (if any) you already own and find the collection(s) that are best for you.
  2. I already own some of the content in these collections. Can I get an additional discount?
    We’ve priced the collections knowing that many of you will own some of the content included in these collections. Even if you own half of the 2,010-volume collection, it’s still an amazing deal. If you’re not convinced, you’re welcome to build your own collection and take 50% off your entire order!
  3. My 2010 book budget is spent? Can I put this on my 2011 budget?
    Yes. We intentionally extended the sale through midnight January 2 to allow you to take advantage of your 2011 book funds.
  4. Can I buy one or more of the collections using a payment plan?
    Absolutely. You can take up to 12 months to pay for your purchase. If you’re going to use a payment plan, you’ll need to wait until they come off Pre-Pub.
  5. The collections are currently on Pre-Pub. Why? And when will they ship?

Occasionally I’m asked, especially from people living in rural area without hi-speed internet access, Do I have to be online to use Logos Bible Software 4?

To clear up any confusion, the answer is no. All of your resources and files are housed on your local hard drive. You can work offline as much as you want. Here’s all you have to do:

  • Choose Tools | Program Settings
  • Set Use Internet to No

You’re now preventing Logos from accessing the internet. Of course, go back and set Use Internet to Yes in order for Logos to synchronize (backup) all of your files (notes, documents, and preferences) with the Logos server.

The Colin E. Gunton Theology Collection

I had a dream last night. I was seated at a large round table. In front of me was a banquet of fine foods. The greatest Christian thinkers were seated around me. I listened with equal parts admiration and curiosity as they spoke about who God is. They debated the trinity, what it means for Jesus to save, the Church, politics, and so much more. I suspected that some of what was shared was not quite right, but I also suspected that they were on to something more wonderful than I could ever concoct—even in my wildest dreams. As I reflected on these saint’s ruminations, I experienced the most curious of expressions: worship. Not hero worship for the of giants of theology, but worship of God. While I listened to them talk, I grew in my awareness of God’s unfathomable value.

Reading the work of some writers is just like this dream. It’s sitting at a great table, listening and learning. The best theologians can make you want to both throw the book (or monitor, or hand held device) across the room and fall on your knees in prayer and worship.

One of these theologians who might not be as well known is the late Colin Gunton. Before his death in 2003, Gunton was the Professor of Christian Doctrine at King’s College in London and co-founded the International Journal of Systematic Theology. A noted commentator on Karl Barth and Charles Harthshorne, and good-natured critic of Augustinianism, Gunton’s occasional writings are vast in scope, touching on nearly all aspects of traditional systematic theology or dogmatics: the doctrines of revelation, theological methodology, the Trinity, the Church, anthropology, and of course Christology.

Perhaps the best place to dig into the work of this great thinker is the Colin E. Gunton Theology Collection (6 vols.). These 6 volumes provide a fine contour of his life and work, touching on Trinitarian theology, the place of theology in preaching, and the life of faith. Also noteworthy in this collection are two edited works. In the first, Theology Through the Theologians, Gunton critically interacts with a wide swath of fellow members of the great theological table including Anselm, John Zizioulas, Reinhold Niebuhr, and John Henry Newman. In the second, The Theology of Reconciliation, he collects a number of essays on the broad topic of reconciliation between humans and God, between woman and man, and within the Church.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention his The Actuality of Atonement. Perhaps his best known work, it begins by looking at the history of rationalism through the lens of Kant, Hegel, and Shleiermacher. Gunton then moves through biblical metaphor and theological language before ending with atonement, the Triune God, and the community of reconciliation.

Logos Bible Software 4.2 for Windows Now Shipping

A new version of Logos Bible Software for Windows began shipping on Monday, December 6. Version 4.2 is the sixth major update since we launched Logos 4 last year. Like all previous updates, version 4.2 is a free download for all Logos 4 Windows users.

How Do You Get It?

If you have automatic updating enabled (screenshot), which is the default setting, Logos 4 will notify you that updates are ready to be installed. When you see the balloon tooltip window, right-click on the Logos icon in your system tray and choose to “Install update” (screenshot). If Logos 4 hasn’t downloaded the update by the end of the day, type Update Now into the Command Bar (screenshot). This will force Logos 4 to check for any available updates (screenshot) and begin downloading them.

Logos 4: Wildcard Searching

A Logos user recently e-mailed me this question: How can I find all of the “obedience” words in the Bible like, obey, obedience, obeyed, obedient, etc?

Here’s all you have to do:

  • Click the Search icon to open the Search panel
  • Select Bible as the search type
  • Select the desired range and Bible(s) to search from the drop down lists
  • Type this in the Find box: obe*
  • Press the Enter key to initiate the search

The asterisk (*) is a wildcard representing any number of characters. So you’re searching for all the words beginning with obe followed by anything. This search finds the obedience family along with Obed as well. To remove Obed from the search type this:

obe* ANDNOT obed

As you can see, this wildcard search comes in handy when you’re looking for similar word forms at the same time!

How is the SBLGNT Apparatus Different from Other Apparatuses?

Textual apparatuses can be excellent tools. They do an incredible job of densely packing a large amount of information into a small portion of the printed page. They contain information that is incredibly valuable to the specialist. But the compact nature, abbreviations and symbols take time and effort to master.
The apparatus for the SBLGNT is different. Using a minimum amount of symbols and abbreviations, it gathers some of the most well known textual critics of the past and present (Tregelles, Westcott and Hort, Robinson and Pierpont, those responsible for the Greek text behind the NIV, and those responsible for the NA27/UBS4 text) and records where they agree and where they take different readings. In this way, it is very similar to the apparatus that the Nestle text had for its first twelve editions (1898–1927).
The editions represented in the SBLGNT apparatus form a rough spectrum from Robinson-Pierpont as a representative of the Byzantine text, to Tregelles which, while pre-papyri, was one of the first to break from the Byzantine, to Westcott and Hort (including the great uncials but little papyri) to the NIV Greek text and the NA text which have the benefit of available papyri. The sorts of differences that end up in the SBLGNT apparatus are:

  • Likely to be represented in an English translation. The KJV, of course, uses a more Byzantine Greek source. The NIV and NA do not. Several other NT translations (ESV, NLT, NET, etc.) actually have their own underlying Greek text with some degree of difference from the NA27, most of the divergences in those would also be accounted for with readings given in the SBLGNT. This range of information gives the person preaching/teaching/exegeting the passage familiarity with options their pupils or parishioners may have represented in their translations.
  • Given the “spectrum” of the editions, the variant info might quickly point out some more interesting variants. If the SBLGNT agrees with Westcott and Hort, Tregelles, and NIV/NA but disagrees with Robinson-Pierpont, it is likely a pretty standard difference with the Byzantine text. But if the SBLGNT’s chosen reading is only present in Robinson-Pierpont or Tregelles then it might be more interesting and worth a deeper look into the specialist-oriented materials such as the UBS or NA apparatuses, technical commentaries such as ICC or Word Biblical Commentary, the Editio Critica Maior, Tischendorf, Comfort & Barrett, and the like.

No one apparatus is perfect for everyone. The NA27 apparatus gives manuscript-level information to those who require it. The UBS4 apparatus is geared towards translators. The SBLGNT apparatus complements these functions, pointing out readings of interest for further research, instead of competing with them.
